Whitney C's City Tips

  • Tip 15-20% in restaurants if gratuity has not already been added to the bill.
  • Compared to most cities, it's fairly easy to find parking in Portland. However, it's also a really walkable city, and great for biking too!
  • Some parking meters accept credit cards, while others do not. Bring some quarters just in case.

OMSI is absolutely one of Portland's highlights, no matter what your age. Tons of interactive exhibits make for a super fun day and lots of learning — which your kids will largely be unaware of, simply because they're having too much fun!

    Tips
    • Although a full day here would be best, even an hour or two will definitely be enjoyable.
    • There are a couple of small cafeterias where you can get food, snacks, or coffee if you start to get hungry.
    • Make sure to leave time for the gift shop — it sells the coolest gifts, books, and gadgets.

    • The cafeteria here is delicious, way better than your regular zoo food. It's a great place to stop for lunch.
    • If you can plan your visit accordingly, tickets are cheaper on the second Tuesday of each month.
    • If you're visiting during the holidays, do not miss the "Zoo Lights," when the entire zoo is decked out in Christmas lights.

Specifically geared toward younger children (two to five or so), the Portland Children's Museum offers loads of fun exhibits to keep the kiddos occupied! Dress-up, arts and crafts, story time, musical instruments... you name it they have it! You will have a blast along with the kiddies!

As a bonus, there are also some great gluten-free options, so no one has to miss out on the pancakes!

If you're in Portland, you obviously have to stop by a brewery at some point (even with 'under 21s' in tow). Hopworks is great and very kid-friendly, so it's the perfect option for families. The kids will enjoy the fun bicycle decor and good food, leaving you to focus on the more important things.

Another Portland gem, McMenamins is a chain restaurant like you've never seen before. This establishment has locations everywhere, which is all the more impressive because each has been created from a historic building of some kind. The Kennedy School location remakes (you guessed it) a 1915 elementary school, replacing unrecognizable grub and surly cafeteria staff with hearty pub fare (and some lovely brews for you!).
