Puneet A's City Tips

  • Delhi-belly is practically unavoidable. Reduce your chances of feeling unwell by drinking only bottled water and eating freshly cooked food, prepared on the spot.
  • Navigate New Delhi using the metro — single and all-day passes are available.
  • Wherever the metro doesn't reach, take a tuk-tuk or an autowala.
  • Tipping 10% in restaurants, which don't have a service charge already added, is a good bet.
  • For cab drivers, round up the fare. If you've hired a car or cab for the day, add a little more.

    Natraj Dahi Bhalle Wala
    Restaurants (Indian, Fast food)
    Puneet A Says:

One of Delhi's most legendary restaurants and a must on a culinary trip, Natraj Dahi Bhalle Wala sells the best 'Dahi Bhallas' on the planet. "Bhallas" are lentil dumplings, usually dipped in a pool of curd, seasoned with traditional Indian spices, and served with tamarind chutney. This place first opened its doors in 1940 (pre-independence), and has remained popular ever since.

    Tips
    • No cars are permitted down its extremely crowded and narrow lane. Go by metro and alight at Chandni Chowk Metro Station.

    Puneet A Says:

If you're tight on time, Chaina Ram is the best place in Delhi to taste every type of traditional Indian sweet-meat in one go. A Delhi institution since 1901, this shop is known for preparing all its sweets in Desi Ghee (clarified butter), and is most famous for its Malai Ghewar, a rajasthani honeycomb-like sweet, made from flour, dipped in sugar syrup, and topped with condensed milk. Divine!

    Puneet A Says:

An iconic place on any local food lover's list, this place thrives on serving a single speciality dish. 'Chholey Bhature' (chickpea curry) is the ultimate Punjabi Dish, in my opinion, and a must-try while you're in town. Sita Ram Diwan Chand is so popular, in fact, that it opens at 11 am, and sells out by 5 pm, without fail — even on weekdays!

    Tips
    • Extremely narrow streets so forget going by car — it's just steps away from RK Ashram metro station.
    • You can also buy packaged "Chholey" to take home. It has a shelf-life of 3 months. Highly recommended!
    • The place is usually very crowded so be prepared!

    Puneet A Says:

The go-to place for all Indian Curries, Kebabs and Dals, Gulati Restaurant on Pandara Road has been legendary for serving top-notch North Indian, Mughlai cuisine since 1959. The restaurant has withstood the test of time, serving consistently great dishes for decades. It's a sure bet for visitors looking for a satisfying, traditional meal.

    Puneet A Says:

Andhra Bhavan is famous for its delicious Thalis (platters), and Mutton Biryani, usually served on Sundays. Though it is a government canteen, and somewhat basic, it is still popular with savvy local foodies, who come here for good quality dishes and authentic South Indian flavors.

    Tips
    • Andhra's food is known to be very spicy. Avoid drinking milk or eating dairy afterwards, otherwise it could result in Delhi-Belly!
    • Besides the Biryani (only served on Sundays), I recommend the Mutton Roast and Prawn Curry.
    • There are long queues on weekends and Public Holidays, so arrive early and grab a seat as soon as you can.
    • The South Indian Thali is incredibly authentic and offers a good opportunity to taste the spicy flavors of southern coastal cuisine without going there.
    • Come here with a local or a guide if possible.

This hip young hangout in Khan Market is best visited for dessert, particularly for its Mississippi Mud Pie, which might just be the most delicious in the world. Period.
