Puneet A's City Tips

  • Take the "Hop On Hop Off" (HOHO) bus, which connects many of the city's most colorful shopping markets. You can buy a pass valid for one or two days.
  • Keep your money and credit cards securely in a concealed pouch or money-belt.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing — it not only reduces the stares you'll get, but you'll be more comfortable and feel more respectful.
  • You must cover up your shoulders and legs when visiting religious places.
  • Take the metro to avoid heavy traffic on the road. Buy a "Smart Card" and top this up with credit to avoid the queues for buying tickets.
  • Keep yourself hydrated by drinking freshly bottled water.
  • Black and yellow-roofed city taxis are easy to hail. Make sure they agree to run by the meter, or you may be overcharged.
  • Look for a hotel in the upscale neighborhoods of central or South Delhi, and stay away from the hustle and bustle. Book a home stay, guesthouse, or a small boutique hotel.
  • Carry cash to the markets, as many vendors do not accept credit cards.
  • Many dishes in Delhi are spicy. Let the chef know if you would like less/no spice.

    Puneet A Says:

This historic market has existed for hundreds of years — since merchants from China and Europe first arrived and began to sell their wares in India. A real treasure trove for shoppers, the market is helpfully divided into bazaars with different areas of specialization: fabrics in Katra Neel, silver in Dariba Kalan, needlework in Kinari Bazaar, and electronics in Bhagirath Palace.

While not for the faint-hearted, this market is a must for backpackers, as some of the best bargain shopping in New Delhi can be done here. Paharganj market deals in wholesale and exports to foreign countries, making it the perfect place to browse for inexpensive clothing, shoes, jewelry, books, music, textiles, handicrafts, hookah pipes, incense, and anything else on your souvenir list.

The 'Piazza' of Delhi, Connaught Place is an impressive example of original colonial architecture — and also a massive shopping area! Though some say it's gone a little downhill in recent years, the flea market here is still a reliable spot for snatching-up great deals on everything from saris and silver to perfumes and pashmina shawls. Keep your eyes open, as there's a bargain to be had on literally every corner!

The regular tourist may visit Dilli Haat for its traditional village atmosphere — complete with thatch-roofed cottages — but the 'shopping tourist' comes for its array of Indian handicrafts and artifacts. Another distinctive feature is that the artists sell their own goods themselves — meaning your money does not go through any middlemen.

The market's food stalls offer delicious snacks and drinks — as well as good people-watching.

    South Extension Market
    Flea & Street Markets
    Puneet A Says:

Though a little spread-out and chaotic, South Extension Market is the place to be if you are looking for up-market, high-street shopping in Delhi. The market is divided into two parts: South Extension I is the place to head to for brand-name clothing, fashion jewelry, music and sweets, whereas South Extension II has a lounge and several other good-quality restaurants.
