Our main reason for going to Siem Reap was to visit the legendary Angkor Wat archaeological phenomenon. It did not let us down. We had 2 1/2 days to see everything and were travelling with 2 teenage boys. To see everything you need to be prepared to be on the go from dawn till sunset and beyond; just in case you dont make it back to Siem Reap. It is about being able to view this wonder of the world, to experience how the People of Cambodia and their Country.

Karen R's City Tips

  • We had a Tuk Tuk driver called Sahi. A young man who was studying and holding down two jobs so we gave him extra towards his studies than what was quoted. Also he had some misfortune with a few flats - this would have eaten into his earnings completely so we paid for these - equivalent to $25.
  • We caught a bus (recommended by Cashew Nut) to get to Phnom Phen so we could see the country side. Please be away this was a great experience but it was bumpy at times. We had a short lunch/toilet stop - order food first then use the bathrooms while waiting for order).
  • Go to the Night Markets and eat at the local food stores - the food is delicious and local. We steered away from anything that was too touristy as the food was not usually as good and too Westernised. We went to Cambodia to experience how the locals eat.
  • Cashew Nut was in a good location away from the Main Tourist strip - it was quiet. They were very knowledgeable and keen to let you know highlights that were off the beaten track that would take your breath away.
  • We got a one day pass to Angkor Watt. We started at Angkor's main temple to see the sunrise and saw everything else that it gave access to in one day - it was exhausting but exhilarating. Note: A 3 day pass at the time we went did not give any discount advantage so when we returned and got another one day pass to see things we'd missed after visiting the Museum we were not disadvantage price wise. (Approximately $US20 per day for a 1 day pass; $60US 3 day pass per person when we visited)
  • Attend the Siem Reap Museum first if it is possible. This will give you a great overview of Angkor Wat to ensure you see it all. We saw this last and realised we had not seen the whole of Angkor Wat - luckily we had an extra 3 hours to go back and see this before leaving Siem Reap.
  • Staying in one of the boutique smaller hotels and/or B&B's you can get away from being caught up in all the Tourist hype and yet experience a good level of comfort for those who dont want to rough it. There reputation is based on their "customer service" so it is important to make sure you are looked after.

The staff were helpful. They organised trustworthy Tuk Tuk driver; recommended off the beaten track highlights; suggested great food places to get local food. Clean and comfortable but basic. Caters for families; young people and older people with a level of fitness.

Breathtaking not just because it is one of the Ancient World's wonders but its shear size. The work and time it would have taken to build, plan, carve is almost unfathomable. Truly a lasting memory that is not to be missed.

    Tips
    • Go to see the Sunrise over Angkor Wat - It gets crowded so we made our way to extreme left side of the lake (when facing Angkor Wat to get best view). Then go and explore rest of Angkor Wat - or come back to see the rest later in the day - 1 hour to see Sunrise (enter via west gate) and then return later to see the rest (enter via east gate)

    Tips
    • A mysterious man appeared out of no-where and lead me to this sacred place the locals worship Buddha. Small tight passages we wove through; no-one else was around. Just as I thought I was being lead to a dead end of nothing I rounded a corner to see a serene carving of a Buddha surrounded by offerings. I had to crouch down to see it fully. I could feel its sacredness and beauty. See if you can find this small Temple within a Temple.

    Tips
    • It will take about 20-35 minutes depending on how fit you are or how young the kids are.
    • Your view will depend on the weather - it was hazy the day we went up there so we explored the Temple and then made our way down.
    • The steps are very steep when you leave the upper parts of the Temple Ruins - so if you are leaving after Sunset take a torch as there are no lights and it gets very dark.
