Stan L's City Tips

  • Arrange your own private car with a driver/guide for the day, and explore the island at your own pace. (Check out the TripAdvisor Bali Travel Forum for recommendations.)
  • When entering Hindu temples, remember to have your knees and shoulders covered. Most temples ask you to wear a sarong and sash, which you can borrow if you don't have your own.
  • Bring enough local currency as there will be few ATM or money changers along the way.
  • Although tipping is not mandatory, it is nice to do so when you enjoyed your meal and the service. (Rounding up to the next 10 or 50 thousand rupiah is usually acceptable.)
  • Carry a sarong with you, and use it to cover your shoulders when entering temples.
  • Balinese generally don't mind having their pictures taken, although it is nice to ask permission before you take a photo.
  • When you come across praying Hindus, try not to walk in front of them while they pray.

This temple, at the foot of Mount Batukaru, is very sacred to Balinese Hindus. Built in the 11th century and dedicated to the ancestors of the Tabanan regency royalty, it makes for a great introduction to Balinese culture.

Tanah Lot is one of the nine directional temples in Bali. The six temples it's comprised of, built on the outer corners of the island, are believed to protect Bali from bad spirits. The ideal spot to join the locals for a blessing!
