Kirsty S's City Tips

  • Chiang Mai has a strong artistic tradition so in addition to the romantic attractions listed below, be sure to check out the quaint little art galleries scattered around the city, especially around Tha Pae Road.
  • While it’s not an expected custom, tipping at the end of your meal in Chiang Mai is considered polite. 10-15% is common in upmarket restaurants, whereas rounding up the bill is acceptable in smaller, local food spots.
  • For shorter journeys in Chiang Mai, cycling is a safe and easy way for you and your loved one to explore the city, particularly within the walls of the old city where traffic is light.
  • If not walking or cycling, the easiest way of getting around Chiang Mai is by songthaew or tuk tuk. Always agree on a fare upfront before you begin your journey.
  • Mae Ping River Cruise
    Boat Tours
    Kirsty S Says:

Cruising down the Mae Ping River on a raft is a romantic way to spend a few hours. While the banks of the river around the city are now scattered with hotels and restaurants, the moment you drift out into rural Chiang Mai the scenery switches to lush jungle and traditional teak houses. The ancient lost city of Wiang Kum Kam can also be found along the banks of the river, just south of Chiang Mai.

    Good for
    • Must See
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • While a Mae Ping River cruise is enjoyable at any time of the year, water levels are naturally lower in the dry season so rocks can sometimes cause obstructions.

Enjoy a massage with your other half by taking them to Green Bamboo Massage. There are plenty of places to enjoy a massage around Chiang Mai but Green Bamboo operates in a friendly and cosy atmosphere with a focus on Lanna Thai treatments. It’s a cute little hut tucked away in a side street within the walls of the old city.

    Kirsty S Says:

Doi Inthanon is the tallest mountain in Thailand and if it’s stunning scenery you and your loved one are after, you could do worse than a visit to the national park that surrounds it. The park has hiking trails, waterfalls and two pagodas. It’s a popular day trip from Chiang Mai, offering a cool respite from the city heat with a truly spectacular backdrop.

    Good for
    • Must See
    • Nature Lover
    Tips
    • Because of its location away from the city, the best way to visit Doi Inthanon is by private taxi or as part of a day trip.
    • Be aware than it’s much cooler at the Doi Inthanon National Park compared to the city, so you might want to bring extra clothing.
