Melbourne is no doubt the café capital of Australia. In fact, chic Melbourne style cafes are so popular they are being exported to places like New York city! You will be hard pressed to sample but a small portion of them, along with wide variety of funky restaurants and bars. Melbourne truly is the home of culinary delights in Australia.

Lynda C's City Tips

  • Prices of food and drinks in Melbourne are on the higher end.
  • Tipping is not expected with your everyday dining; however it is more frequent in finer dining establishments. Generally it is good to tip a little.
  • Be sure to sample breakfast at one of the abundant cafés during your stay – breakfast and brunch are becoming the most popular meals of the day to eat out on the weekends!
  • Trams are a great way to get around in Melbourne. There are free trams that operate within the CBD but for others you will need a Myki card. This can be purchased at many retailers including 7-11 stores and topped up online. This will also cover you on trains and buses. Visit the Public Transport Victoria website for more information.
  • Day time is generally casual and relaxed in Melbourne; however this is also the home of fashion in Australia so keep it smart.
  • Eating out at night varies on the venue, but you will probably feel most comfortable in smart, fashionable attire.
  • Mamasita
    Restaurants (Mexican)
    Lynda C Says:

Immerse yourself in the flavours and spirit of Latin America. Former visitors of Mexico will rekindle their passion for ‘comida tipico’ as you are transported back to the home of Tacos and Mezcal. Family-style share meals with bite-sized versions of authentic dishes offer a variety to suit all tastes. The décor and Spanish translations add to the authenticity, along with the extensive Tequila menu.

    Tips
    • Get there early, leave your name and number at the door and grab a drink at one of the surrounding bars as there are no reservations.
    • Sample the best 100% Agave Tequila but don’t miss out on trying Mezcal, Tequila’s clear, smooth and less known-about sister.

Offering a worldly blend of flavours, Two Birds is located in South Yarra – not far from popular Chapel Street and Toorak road. Coffee connoisseurs can enjoy a full range here. Besides a great espresso, they also offer cold drip, aeropress or syphon coffee. With clean and sophisticated designs and wide open windows, Two Birds is open, airy and light. They pride themselves in making their menu items from scratch such as crumpets and baked goods, and even their own relish.

Creator Johnny di Francesco claims that if the pizza is in the oven longer than 90 seconds it is not a true Neapolitan style pizza. And he should know. He has won award for the best Margarita pizza at the world championships in Italy. If you can distract yourself long enough from the chef's pizza base twirling entertainment, you can view a varied menu of pizzas, pastas and main dishes such as Ossobucco. For desert the Nutella filled calzone is 'delizioso'!

Such delicious options – you will forget you came here for your healthy conscious and just indulge in the experience.

Never tried Afghani food before? You are in for a cultural treat! This Middle Eastern homestyle restaurant is located on Brunswick street and is known for its music, cafes and alternative fashion shopping. Along with Kababs and Kofta, vegetarians will be please with the variety of options from Dahl to Qorama-i-Gulpee, a delicious cauliflower dish. The banquet is a great option to sample a bit (or a lot!) of everything. Owned and operated by the same family for over twenty years, you can trust that you will receive an authentic and flavourful experience!

Overlooking the stunning Yarra River, Fatto is located on the terrace at Hammer Hall. Modern Italian, delightfully presented in a clean and contemporary setting. The menu is simple focusing on quality over the number of dishes with authentic homestyle flavours. A great place to eat before catching a show at the Melbourne Arts Centre or for a relaxing weekend lunch.

Be prepared for complete and utter indulgence. The array of Belgian chocolates is truly mouth watering, but wait until you take a seat to peruse the menu from one of the luxurious lounges. Delicious hot chocolates, with unique twists such as chilli and cinnamon are a highlight. There is also a great selection of deserts. Thankfully they have put together a Dessert Degustation so you can sample more than one. After shopping up a storm in the city, this is the ultimate place to take a load off and delight in total chocolate decadence.

To combat this issue – go for the Feed Me option. To add to the vibrancy of the menu and atmosphere, take a look at The Wall of Art display which consists of not-for-profit contemporary pieces.
