Swedes, and Stockholmers in particular, love their coffee. In order to really experience the life of the locals, you need to find the places where Swedish dads hang out during their parental leave to enjoy a fresh brew; where quintessential hipsters go to get their inspiration; and where relaxing is taken more seriously than anywhere else in the world. This guide will help you find the more off-neat places you need to visit in order to become a real Stockholmer!

Johannes F's City Tips

  • It's easy to navigate around Stockholm if you speak English. No need to study Swedish before you get here!
  • Even though tipping isn't as compulsory in Sweden as it is in the US or UK, a waiter's salary in Stockholm doesn't make you rich either, which is why tips are always appreciated.
  • Credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere in Stockholm. No matter whether you're buy a TV or just a cup of tea, it's usually enough to just carry plastic rather than cash.

Monteliusvägen is an observation path on Stockholm's southern island of Södermaln. The path was built in 1998 and has attracted many locals and visitors since, who come to enjoy the view over Stockholm. From here you get a great view over Gamla Stan and Kungsholmen.

Taxinge Slott is one of those little oases that Stockholmers visit when they want to escape their busy city lives. It's only 45 minutes by car from Stockholm but feels like a whole different world. The 200 year-old castle is located right next to Lake Mälaren, and is surrounded by a little forest, which can almost make you feel like you are in a Disney movie. Many people come here just to take a walk around the beautiful area or to have coffee inside the castle.

It is no secret that Swedes love their coffee. This also explains the vast number of coffee shops you find in Stockholm — the only question is, where do you go to get the best roast? Espresso Sosta Bar definitely belongs to the top coffee shops you can find in Stockholm. Truly authentic Italian espresso and delicious pastries — what more can one ask for?

If you are looking for the best spa in Stockholm, visit the Yasuragi Spa and Hotel in Nacka. Only 30 minutes by train from Stockholm Central Station or 40 minutes by boat from Gamla Stan, Yasuragi offers the possibility to experience traditional Japanese hot springs, massages, and yoga classes in beautifully designed facilities. In addition, Yasuragi makes it possible to extend your visit and stay in one of their lovely hotel rooms, eat in one of the Japanese restaurants, or just have drink at the sake bar. Gripsholm Castle was built in 1537 and hosts one of the world's most important portrait collections today. The castle is located in a small town called Mariefred and attracts many visitors each year. The castle is open to the public and provides guided tours in both Swedish and English. It's not located in the most convenient location if you are in Stockholm, but is definitely still worth a visit if you have time.

Färgfabriken (color factory) is a gallery/museum/coffee-shop/convention center/popular hipster hangout, located in Stockholm's Liljeholmen, right by the water front. The former factory attracts visitors with its continuously changing events and its great coffee shop. Stockholmers love to come here on a weekend to join in a discussion or just have coffee in a nice environment.

At Urban Deli you can enjoy very good food in a leisurely environment, or you can come here to buy your groceries/picnic supplies.
