Best Food in Copenhagen

Between the extremes of the world's best restaurant, Noma, and the classic 'pølsevogn' hotdogs on Strøget, here are some of my gastronomic favourites in Copenhagen - mainly selected for their focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, pleasant ambiance and creative interior design. The list moves from the best street markets to some rather hyped Nordic spots, and includes healthy, scrumptious breakfasts, quick bites on the go and delicious sit-down dinners.

Camilla C's City Tips

  • Tips are completely optional, but always appreciated when the service warrants.
  • With bike lanes along every street, cycling is the easiest way to navigate the city. Get all the tips here: www.visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/copenhagen-bike-rentals.
  • Public transportation works well in Copenhagen. A City Pass gives you unlimited access to trains, metro, buses, and water buses in zones 1 - 4, covering all city areas.
  • Bus routes cover the entire city area, with buses running every 10-20 minutes during the daytime. The metro functions on a 24/7 schedule, connecting Amager to the centre.
  • No matter where you go out to eat, don't worry that you might be underdressed - Danes dress casually!

In 2013, Claus Meyer, the internationally acclaimed chef behind Noma, founded The Standard, a delightful restaurant complex housed in a former hydrofoil terminal. The mint-green Art Deco building features two bars, a jazz club, and three magnificent eateries. The most accessible, in terms of price level and menu, is casual-chic Alamanak - serving up typical Danish fresh pastries for breakfast, smørrebrød for lunch and modern interpretations of traditional dinner dishes. The minimalist white and soft pastel surroundings are inspiring, and the waterfront views aren't too shabby either.

Seasonal Danish produce meets chili, lime, coriander and cacao at this subterranean Mexican spot. Barburrito's dim lighting and casual, convivial vibe makes it a fun spot for a stylish yet informal meal, and its kitchen turns out what are by far the best tacos in Copenhagen. The decor is inspired by New York, the price is reasonable, and the teqtonic with ginger should be drunk with each of the dishes you choose from its exciting menu!

Part of the Madklubben ('food club') group of gourmet restaurants, Grill Royal in Kongens Nytorv is a nice and central place to drop in for a casual meal. The food menu is easy - salad + burger or steak to share + a wide selection of desserts - and accompanied by an equally delicious drinks menu. In fact, the restaurant is also recommended for just dessert and a cocktail or glass of wine. The Scandi/French-fusion interior design, with Børge Mogensen's classic Søborg-stol chairs, yellow Le Creuset ceramic ware and cute melamine coffee cups, adds to the 'fabulous fast food' concept that Grill Royal is aiming for.

Boasting high-quality, organic and beautifully displayed local delicacies and international cuisine, this wonderful foodie mecca is a colourful, fresh and lively alternative to supermarkets. Shop in Torvehallerne for delicious fish from Fiskerikajen, world-class coffee from The Coffee Collective, creative oatmeal and risottos from Grød, healthy sandwiches and salads from Smag or Palæo, sugary treats from Café Rosa, chilled biodynamic rosé from Le Pinard, halal meat from the Turkish butcher.... and so the eclectic list continues. Popular among locals and visitors alike, Torvehallerne is a place where you can spend a very long time browsing, smelling, looking, tasting or merely sitting outside in the sun to enjoy your purchases.

Adendum, Bibendum, Falernum... These words could form part of a nice nursery rhyme, but they are also synonymous with 'delicious': the names of three casual and rustic bohemian-style wine bars. Bibendum, my favourite, is close to the lakes in Nansensgade and has a cosy, romantic atmosphere, with about 150 different wine labels (and about 30 wines by the glass) available.

    • The chain also has a sister in the meat-packing district (Paté Paté), as well as one on Frederiksberg (Panzón), and one in the centre (Bar Moritz).

Set in an airy, industrial space, Wulff + Konstali is a unique food shop featuring all manner of deliciousness - from homemade hummus, pesto and frikadeller, to panini, frittata and homemade müsli. While the shop is notable mainly for its delicious new Nordic daily lunches, 'Manamanam' ready-made dinners and quality drinks, it also deserves special attention for its yummy brunch. Foodies cycle from all over Copenhagen to put the cheap meal together themselves. Everything is made from scratch, and you get to choose between 18 different components, traditional as well as experimental. With two charming, lively locations, the establishment boasts good, honest food in inspiring surroundings. Oh, and the bread is of course freshly baked in the in-house bakery.

Located across from Skuespilhuset at the end of Nyhavn, and right next to the Opera, Papirøen ('the paper island') is home to a colourful, popular and - relatively - cheap new food market. The selection on offer depends on seasonal and daily market hits, but a typical stroll through Copenhagen Street Food could tempt your senses with anything from Cuban and classic fish & chips, to Belgian chips fried in duck fat, organic sausages, homemade curries and Italian charcuterie. The sun is above the island from 11am until sunset, so go when it's not too cloudy, take a seat on one of the beach chairs and enjoy the view of the traffic in the harbour and the touristy hot spots of the city while you munch away.

Known for their trendy galleries, cross fit lab and vibrant nightlife, the rough and unpolished former meat halls of Kødbyen are also home to an array of excellent and informal restaurants. At my absolute favourite, Mother, you can dig into authentic Italian, including crisp bruschetta and taste-intense sourdough pizzas. Nearby, at Fiskebaren, the jellyfish tank shouldn't divert your attention from the incredible Limfjorden oysters or whiting from the North Sea. Another interesting spot is Nose2Tail, where literally everything from the animal can be found in the organic dishes, and New York-hip Kul, where Asian, Nordic and Southern European styles are fused in elegant and tasty ways. The list goes on and on, so my advice is to just explore the area and find your own favourite!

Besides making some of the best coffee in the city, fun and informal Ipsen & Co. is also a hot spot because of its location - sitting under the treats at its outdoor tables, and gazing at people walking up and down Gl. Kongevej, makes for a fantastic time. Ipsen also captures the Danish 'hyggelig' atmosphere - from small back corners to large communal tables, the place is cozy, convivial, and welcoming, offering seats that match every mood. The orange juice is freshly squeezed, the hawthorne purée is homemade, and the wonderfully smelling coffee is also sold from the 'to-go window,' so you don't even have to get off your bike to enjoy it!

In the yard behind the flagship store, the café at Royal Copenhagen combines classic open sandwich elements - such as herring, liver paté and pork tenderloin - with maki and nigiri rolls in a tasty staging of Danish design: 'smushis'.
