Tucked away not far from the Spanish Steps is this beautiful church. Not only is the interior stunning, but the priest was a charming gentle person wanting to talk and welcome you into his sanctuary. When built in 12th century, it was located on northernmost edge of Rome. The dome was designed by Borromini and church houses angels carved by Bernini.

This is a significant church in Rome. In 356 Pope Liberius dreamt of the Virgin telling him to build a church on the spot where he found snow. It fell on the Esquiline in the middle of summer so he built this church and there is a snow ceremony commemorated each year by dropping white petals from the ceiling. The colonnaded nave is part of the original 5th century building as are the biblical scenes in the aisle and the spectacular mosaics for which it is most renowned.

This church is also significant in Rome's papal history. Located up the top of the hill away from the Colosseum. The Laterani family were disgraced in the 4th century and their land was taken by Emperor Constantine to build Rome's first Christian basilica. The church retains the original shape but has been rebuilt twice due to destruction by fire. Borromini did the last major rebuild in 1646. The pope is the Bishop of Rome and celebrates Maundy Thursday mass in this cathedral.

This road is an interesting walk taking you from Piazza del Popolo to Via dei Condotti, the famous brand name street for shops and up to the Spanish Steps. Via del Corso takes you past interesting buildings, shops and eateries. It once was the road where riderless horse races took place, the horses fed stimulants, wrapped in nail-studded ropes and fireworks let off at their heels to make them take off.

This complex comprises 2 museums that are worth seeing for the statuary, carvings and paintings. It is less visited than other museums and therefore you can take your time without being inundated with other tourists.

This bridge takes you into Castel Sant'Angelo. It is a very decorative bridge due to the beautiful statuary lining the sides. It is also interesting to linger over the street hawkers plying their interesting wares. It once had a triumphal arch which was demolished after 200 pilgrims were crushed in 1450 due to the crowds.

    Tips
    • The bridge leads you back along via dei Coronari (full of antique shops and original 15-16th century buildings) to the heart of Rome towards Piazza Colonna.
    • Along via dei Coronari, look for building no 156-7, one of the earliest built and house of the mistress of Cesare Borgia, Fiammetta.

In the Aventine district, below Palatine Hill, is the church Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Set into the wall of the portico is the Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth). It may have been a drain cover dating to the 4th century BC. Medieval tradition held that the formidable jaws would snap shut over the hand of those who told lies (used for testing the faithfulness of spouses).

This place is a hidden gem where few tourists make their way so you have plenty of time and space to view at leisure and take some really great photos. They were completed in AD217 functioning for about 300 years. The ritual started with a Turkish bath, then a hot room, then to the lukewarm room and then the large central meeting place finished with a plunge into the open air swimming pool. The rich finishing with a scented woollen cloth rub down.

It is so easy to find yourself walking around Rome looking at the central historical area abuzz with locals and tourists that it is easy to forget to look out for the amazing walls that surround the city. Piazza del Popolo has one entrance, another (Porte Latina) is beyond the Baths of Caracalla climbing up the old Roman walk of via di Port Latina to where the locals live outside.

Inaugurated by Trajan in AD113, it is made of marble intricately carved with scenes from the 2 battles that took place in Dacia (Romania) in AD 101-3 & 107-8. There is an internal staircase which is lit by small windows created in the column, the whole height being 40m (131ft). Trajan and his wife's ashes areplaced in a golden urn that sits in the hollow base.

    Tips
    • Starting at the bottom is depicted the Romans preparing for war, at the top the Dacians being ousted from their homeland.
    • The public cannot climb the internal staircase. The statue of St Peter has replaced the one of Trajan at the top of the column.
    • A full set of casts of the reliefs can be seen in Museo della Civilta Romana.

No visit to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Vatican Museums. Amazing collection of antiquities and paintings, sculptures and artefacts gleaned from all over the ancient world and stored for posterity. Especially magnificent is the Sistine Chapel where you can take your time to absorb the amazing paintings lining the wall and ceiling.

    Tips
    • Purchase a pass through Tickitaly, making a booking for a time slot (I suggest you make an early time if possible). This is the cheapest way to get entry.
    • Don't book a guided tour unless you have very little time to visit otherwise you will miss out on being able to linger over the items you want to view.
    • You will need a whole day to visit the museums and basilica and then you will not see everything. Allow a day for the visit if possible.
