stefnicole's City Tips

  • Beware of scam artists - don't accept flowers or crafts from strangers. Be aware of your surroundings and take care with your belongings.
  • Wear proper clothing when visiting churches or St. Peter's Basilica: covered shoulders and pants or trousers.
  • Restaurants near major tourist destinations often have a fixed-price, or tourist menu. It's better to avoid those restaurants and find a restaurant further away from the tourist attraction for higher quality meals.
  • There is no need to buy bottled water in Rome. Public water fountains are plentiful and the water is both refreshing and safe to drink.
  • When ordering breakfast/coffee in a café in the morning, be aware that there may be two prices: one for standing at the bar or counter, and another for sitting down. It is cheaper to order standing at the bar.
  • Italians don't order cappuccinos after 11 am. They drink espresso after noon.
  • At restaurants, the tip is generally included in your final bill, so extra gratuity is not necessary.
  • Most museums/sites close on Mondays. And all national museums are free on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. And leave the heels at home - it seems that only Italian women can walk in heels on cobblestones!
  • The metro is easy to maneuver, but doesn't venture very far into the historic district. Buses are available for other areas, but are not as reliable.
  • The Roma Pass is either a 48 hour or 72 hour public transit pass, and includes free admission to museums or archaeological sites (48 hour - one site; 72 hour - 2 sites). I highly recommend getting it - you'll get your money's worth!

Trastavere is a neighborhood in Rome. It's slightly off the beaten path, and is home to locals, rather than tourists. We stumbled upon this neighborhood while looking for Almost Corner Bookshop (Via del Moro 45), a British run bookshop. Needless to say, we decided to get lost and ending up finding a restaurant where no English was spoken and the pasta was magnificent. It can be a bit of effort to get here, as no metro stations are present. But there are bus lines here that originate at Termini, and the walk over the Tiber was refreshing.
