Cambridge, a city with a vibrant student and cultural life, is also one of the most popular touristic destinations in England. This means that its offer of international cuisine is huge. Top-quality restaurants, quaint cafes, and traditional pubs will introduce you to a wide range of new flavours you wouldn't want to miss. These are my recommendations for the best food and drink options in Cambridge.

Ines R's City Tips

  • Remember to be polite. Saying "please", "thank you", and smiling will take you far in England.
  • Try to keep your voice down while in restaurants and cafes. Talking loudly in a fancy place is considered rude. Never mind about pubs though!
  • Tipping is not compulsory in the UK. However, if you're happy with the service given in a restaurant it is usual to leave a 10% tip unless the menu notes that service is included.

Set in central Cambridge, Market Hill (aka Market Square) is a daily outdoor market with stalls where you can find a great variety of food and other goods. A marketplace since Saxon times, it offers lots of local produce, fresh fruit and veggies, oils, spices, bread, waffles and a large sweet stall, as well as plenty of clothes and souvenirs. You'll love the atmosphere here!

    Ines R Says:

Founded in 1667 as 'The Eagle and Child', The Eagle is one of the largest and most popular pubs in Cambridge, only a stone's throw from famous King's College. This historical place is comprised of a pub, beer garden and the so-called RAF bar, where World War II airman's graffiti cover ceiling and walls. It is here, also, that the discovery of DNA was first announced in 1953. The walls are decorated with paintings, newspaper clippings and sketches from the last three centuries, and delicious food and great beer are served for reasonable prices in a really nice all-age environment.

Fitzbillies is a Cambridge institution. No visit is complete without a visit to this lovely art nouveau-decorated little cake shop. All cakes are homemade and delicious, and you can also order personalized ones. There is a cafe/restaurant open daily for coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, serving savoury tarts, pies, rolls, salads and soups. Dinner is also available Thursday to Saturday. All food is made from scratch using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. Definitely a must.
