The best 'value for money' buys in Goa

  • Category: Other
  • Traveler type: Shopping
  • Appeals to: Couples/romantics, Singles, Families with small children, Families with teenagers, Large groups, Seniors, Students, Budget travellers , Tourists
  • Seasons: Winter
  • 1. Gold/Jewellery/diamonds

It is so cheap to buy gold/jewellery/diamonds in Goa. Buy from proper jewellerers, and shop around (dont buy from the 1st one) to find out the prices. The Kashmir jewellerers are generally more expensive and hard to haggle. If you have got enough time (2+ week holiday) try and get to know other tourists to find out their experiences, what to look for in a diamond etc. Ive heard people coming back in Uk and getting their jewellery valued 3 times higher. They will also be happy to make you jewellery from design, workmanship is cheap and generally high quality (if you are not happy with it, speak your mind, Goans are eager to please, and know how much business relies on word of mouth).

  • 2. Leaher/Suede

You can get leather bags, trousers/jackets etc make to measure very cheaply. I bought my suede trousers made to measure (my own design) for just £18. A leather suitcase made wonderfully (just watch out the plastic expandable handles which are likely to get damaged in transport), for around £20.

  • 3. Suits made to measure

Making a suit is very cheap, shop around and keep your ears open, get some recommendations from other tourists. My hubby bought a lovely, lined suit with shirt for just £60. Haggle the prices. If you are not happy with the quality of the work, speak your mind, Goans are eager to please, and know how much business relies on word of mouth.

  • 4. Souveniers for lady

Shawls/pashminas and wooden 'secret' jewellery boxed. You can get a nicely carved jewellery box for around £5. Shop around, leave the shop and they will soon call you back. Bying a pasmina/shawl is a mindfield, prices range from under £2 to as high as they dare to go, trust your instinct, feel the materials, and dont worry to offend the shopkeeper by offering low prices, that is truly the only way to find out the true value.

  • 5. Dont take too many clothes with you as you can buy them cheaply in Goa

Dont have a full suitcase of clothes when travelling to Goa, you might end up in the situaton where there is no space for souveniers. Many of our westers clothes are synthetic whereas Indian cotton is better for hot weather (lets your skin breath and feels cooler). As a general rule offer around 120-150rs for ladies tops and skirts (in shacks), for 200rs you definately have bought it and the shop/shack keeper is very happy. Sarong for less than 100rs.
