Remaining faithful to its promise to provide the whole truth about travel, the good, the bad and the ugly, TripAdvisor identified, for the second year in a row, the 10 "dirtiest" hotels in the U.S. based on traveler ratings for cleanliness. This list includes snippets from actual reviews!

  • 1. Tropicana Resort Hotel
Super 8 Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Virginia Beach, Virginia

"The first thing I noticed on check-in was the charming urine aroma of the first floor hallway. Luckily, we stayed on the 5th floor where there was a slightly less repulsive mildew-like stench. The cornucopia of odors didn’t stop there… our room smelled like a mixture of yeast and male cat urine. The room was dirty… I don’t mean to say it simply wasn’t vacuumed or dusted properly, but that there was TRASH ON THE FLOOR. The bedside table had a green-furry growth around the bottom edge. I looked in the drawer for the phonebook and found used tissues. Don’t stay here, this place is a dump."

  • 2. Hotel Carter
Hotel Carter, New York City, New York

"Well, I read the reviews before I left, so I pretty much knew what to expect. And let me tell this, all my fears came true...and then some! 1. The smell - the hotell lobby has a greasy deli as neighbour, and the smell is unbareable. 2. The rooms - the first room I got had a nasty bathroom, used cigarettes and a opened pack of condoms on the floor. The second one was a bit better, but not better than the cochroach that said hallo when I entered the room. 3. The bugs - both me and my friend came home with mutiple flee bites all over the body. There was also various types of bugs that I've never seen before. And they where full of blood when we cruched them....yuck!!! So in conclusion:increase your budget and get a better hotel, for this ruins your vacation! The hotel is out of date, filthy and the staff unfriendly."

  • 3. Rodeway Inn Miami Airport
Rodeway Inn Miami Airport, Miami, Florida

"If Hell had a hotel .... this would be it! Room was very dirty. Carpet filthy and stained. Marks all over walls. After dark, the cockroaches really started to come out. Crawling on the walls, on the desk area, on the bathroom vanity, on our bedside table, just about everywhere. We killed 19 cockroaches before retiring that evening. We could have killed more, however, many were too fast for us. I awoke at 3am. I killed several more cockroaches. Several crawling on the phone, radio, my water glass, and the bedside table. I killed as many as I could but they would just run behind the bedside table. At that time my mother woke up because she felt something crawling on her. Sure enough ...............there was a cockroach in her bed!!! Needless to say we didn’t get much sleep that night."

  • 4. Budget Inn

"This was the most dirty and nasty hotel that I have ever seen in my life! There was no way that I would have laid down in that dirty bed or put my head on the sweat stained pillow. There was soap scum and hair in our bathtub, dried up coffee in our coffee pot, dirty stains on the unkept carpet, stains on the sheets, a dirty towel hanging on the back of the bathroom door, green scum all over the floor of the indoor, opened year round swimming pool. Run, don't walk from this place!!!!!"

  • 5. Red Carpet Inn
Red Carpet Inn, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County

"Aside from the roach that remained in my room for my entire stay, the hookers in the lobby, the truckers walking in from the "restaurant" - really a bar - next to the lobby and staring at me as I checked email in the "lobby" and the gooey substance on the floor that I accidentally stepped in my first night there, I'd say it was a lovely and elegant place. I especially enjoyed the people who banged on my door as they ran down the "hallway" of the motel screaming at 2 and 4 in the morning - it was a nice touch. I don't even want to think about whether the sheets were clean or not on the bed. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a place before - it was so incredibly disgusting."

  • 6. New York Inn
New York Inn, New York City, New York

"Don't even consider this hotel. Yes it's well located, but it's worst than slepping on the street. It's durty. When someone above takes a shower it rains inside your room. I found a condom (used) when I arrived. This hotel must be a joke."

  • 7. Atlantica Resorts
    Atlantica Oceanfront Resort, Myrtle Beach

"Awful! A truue 'Roach Motel' When we checked in the room had not been cleaned. The floor was dirty-we had to keep our shoes on at all times, the beds were half made, and there were crumbs on the table and the night stand. The wall paper had scratches all over it and the walls had stains. There was feces smeared on the wall behind the door. There was a huge hole in the curtain. The pictures had dust on them and the vents had literally an inch of dust on them."

  • 8. Days Inn Lancaster
Country Hearth Inn Lancaster, Lancaster, Lancaster County

"The worst experience we have ever had at a motel. When we went to our rooms the beds had not been changed, the rooms smelled, the bathrooms were extremely nasty and we left and asked for a return of our money. My grandson who is 3 came in the room carrying something in his hand and it was a decomposed bat he picked up in the hall. The manager stated that if we would return the next morning he would refund our money. However, when we returned no money was refunded for 10 rooms for 3 nights. This place is a rip off to the public."

  • 9. Ramada Inn Miami Airport North
    Ramada Hialeah/Miami Airport, Hialeah, Florida

"We left after staying one night because it was so nasty. Our room had a pair of panties on the back of the door, the air conditioner didn't work, and our ceiling was so black it looked as if there had been a fire in the room. There were HUGE stains all over the carpet with a disgusting odor throughout the hotel. The last straw was when we found a bag of "herbs" under the sheets. We felt dirty being there and I hated that my kids were there. It was not much better than a homeless shelter."

  • 10. Sea Club Resort
Sea Club Resort, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County

"Where to begin? The rooms were smelly and dark there were holes in the ceiling and dead roaches everywhere. The door to the room was bent in half then bent back The elevators were broken so we had to lug everything up stairs. I asked to be moved but the 2nd room was on the 5th floor and the mildew smell was overwhelming. We saw a rat run past the room on the second day, we couldn't leave soon enough! Dirty, dumpy, not fit for even spring breakers. This place needs to be torn down"
