Three activity packed days in Glenwood Springs

  • 1. Glenwood Springs
    Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Enjoy a few action-packed days in Glenwood Springs. Here is my Go-List from a few days of very active recreation in Glenwood Springs

  • 2. Glenwood Canyon Resort
Glenwood Canyon Resort, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

A resort with cabins, camper cabins (very bare, priced like hostel pricing), camper sites, RV sites. Because they are located right on the Colorado River, they have convenient rafting right on-site.

  • 3. Glenwood Caverns

The ultimate destination in Glenwood Springs. It starts with a Gondola ride up to the top of the mountain overlooking Glenwood. Once there, about half-dozen thrilly (and scaring) rides await. Also, an awesome fairy cave to tour and a restaurant that was good enough to keep us there for lunch AND dinner. They had an old western band when we were there and activities like panning for gold for the kids.

  • 4. Glenwood Canyon Bike Trail
Glenwood Canyon Bike Trail, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

A full half-day of riding for the whole family through a beautiful canyon. You can start in Glenwood Springs, or get "spotted" and bike one-way, all downhill.

  • 5. Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company

Highly recommended -- Better beers than most brewpubs, and great food. A diverse menu (all of which seems good). We liked the foosball and pooltables for the kids in the back room.

  • 6. Glenwood Hot Springs
Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

A premier attraction for the area.

  • 7. Sunlight Mountain Resort

We didn't actually ski at Sunlight... it is summer after all... but, if it were ski season, we would, and we have. It is a value-priced family ski area, with runs for every type... from easy greens, to double blacks I haven't raised the courage to run yet.

  • 8. Roaring Fork River

The Roaring Fork River begins high above Aspen near Independence Pass. It is a classic ROcky Mountain stream with a steep gradient, narrow rock-studded channels and shallow gravel bars, all of which contribute to nearly continous rapids.

    It has excellent trout fishing.

Numerous creeks feed into the Roaring Fork as it travels about through the Valley. The Frying Pan River joins it at Basalt and the Crystal River flows into it just below Carbondale. It ends in Glenwood Springs, where its waters pour into the Colorado River.

The Fork, as locals call it, is fed by mountain springs and snowmelt, so it is breath-takingly cold in the spring and early summer. The high water season is normally over by early to mid-June and the water warms up enough to inner tube, which is a very popular activity through the Cemetary "town run" just above Glenwood Springs.

As A Gold Medal Stream, mandatory catch and release fly-fishing is extremely popular by both waders and floaters, most of who use dories to get down he river.

Commercial rafting is popular during high water, but is nearly non-existent after mid-June,as the channels narrow and the depth becomes bottom-scraping shallow in places. It is popular with fishing dories and kayakers well into the Fall.

  • 9. Glenwood Springs Golf Club

9 hole course in Glenwood Springs. A VERY nice 9 hole course, fun to play, challenging putting, best secret watering hole in town
