  • Appeals to: Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Budget travellers , Tourists
  • Seasons: Summer
  • 1. Korcula
    Korcula Island, Dubrovnik-Neretva County

This is truly a sleepy island - there's not much to do here so we recommend a few days at most. There is a lot of hiking on the island. We rented bicycles near the main gate and rode out past Lumbarda where we found a private beach.

  • 2. Korcula Town
    Korcula Town, Korcula Island

The town is small but has a lot to offer. We didn't find the locals particularly welcoming but don't take it personally... they don't see many tourists. Enjoy the beauty of the town, walk around it a lot and discover new little nooks and crannies along the way. Don't miss Marco Polo's house :)

  • 3. Hvar
    Hvar, Hvar Island

Be sure to stay in a sobe or apartment here - if you can score one that faces the harbor, take it! Hvar was our favorite destination... definitely a place to waste a week lounging on the shore or sipping wine and nibbling seafood in a cafe.

  • 4. Cafe Santa Barbara, Hvar Town

This cafe is right on the water - don't miss a morning capuccino with the very friendly owner, his wife, and their baby. We visited them every day on Hvar.

  • 5. Dubrovnik
    Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County

This amazing city has a lot to offer both inside and outside of the walls. We recommend at least two full days in the walled city, more if you are going to explore outside or take a cruise to any of the islands. One of the best things to do is sit at a cafe on the Stradun at night and watch the world go by.

  • 6. Ancient City Walls
Ancient City Walls, Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County

Take an entire day and part of the afternoon to truly take in the spectacular views while up on the walls. Bring a bottle of water.... it's hot up there, especially May to August.

  • 7. Elafiti Islands
    Elafiti Islands, Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County

We took a boat to three islands, were served a fresh fish picnic, a few shots of home made "sea sickness cure" that was reminiscent of moonshine spiked with lavendar, and had an incredible day!

  • 8. Gelato in Croatia

There are literally hundreds of gelato stands in every Croatian town. At 5 kuna (about $1 US) it's one of the best things you can treat yourself to. Grab a gelato and stroll down the Riva in Split... gelato and people watching on the Stradun in Dubrovnik... gelato and a walk on the beach in Hvar... HEAVENLY!

  • 9. Diocletian's Palace
    Diocletian's Palace, Split, Split-Dalmatia County

  • 10. Karlovachko beer

Be sure to sample this delicious lager, and sample often!
