  • 1. Bierstube Restaurant

A good place for Western and Thai food. Not expensive and fills the spot. Go there for breakfast and get one of the sets. Best spot is out the front, as you can watch the bustling life pass you by!

  • 2. By The Book Cafe-Bar

Great place for a cup of coffee during the day or a drink at night. Music played with a TV for those wanting a fix of soccer or something. Has a pool table and a good local crowd that's friendly. Also sells second-hand books!

  • 3. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Doi Suthep

Great temple with a beautiful view of Chiang Mai. You can get there by sangthaew, but by motorbike or scoooter is more fun!

  • 4. Dancing Prawns

This is a dish that you can get at many places around Chiang Mai, usually at a riverside eating place. I've had them at the big lake near Chiang Mai and at "North Pattaya" on the river at Chiang Rai. A dish you can talk about many times!!

  • 5. Songkran Festival

This happens between the 12th and 15th April and Chiang Mai is the most famous spot for it! Be prepared to get wet(not bad on those hot days) and carry your stuff in plastic bags(cigarettes, etc.) and enjoy the fun. Warning! Make sure you book ahead, although you can still find a room after thorough searching.

  • 6. Royal Lanna
    Royal Lanna Hotel, Chiang Mai

This is a nice hotel for a reasonable rate. It has a pool and the rooms are big. Rates in 2006 were $AU 45 p.n., which includes a buffet breakfast - if you don't sleep in after a late night!
