My Favorite Atypical European Destinations

29 Jul 2007  I have been living and traveling in Europe for two years.
4.0 of 5 stars based on 9 votes

This is a compilation of my hands down favorite European destinations.

  • 1. Dingle, Ireland
    Dingle, Dingle Peninsula

Friendliest people in Europe. If you want a relaxing vacation while experiencing the Irish culture, Dingle is the place to go. Make sure to stay at Emlagh Lodge (not to be confused with Emlagh House). It is a cozy B&B with an excellent view on the waterfront.

  • 2. Seville, Spain
    Seville, Province of Seville

Seville is a great place to satisfy all your senses. Flamenco Dancing, bull fighting, tapas, and colorful locals can all be found in this southern Spanish city. This city exudes a comfortable confidence that is easy to fall in love with. It is no wonder that Hemingway loved Andalusia. We do too! Be sure to catch the Flamenco show at Tablao Los Gallos. The show was mesmerizing and the highlight of our trip.

  • 3. Naxos, Greece
    Naxos, Cyclades

Naxos is located near the more famous Greek Island of Santorini. If you are looking for a more relaxing island with better beaches, then Naxos is the place. It is a short 2hr ferry ride from Santorini. We stayed at the Agios Prokopios Hotel and it was excellent! It is possibly the best bargain in Europe!

  • 4. Hallstatt, Austria
    Hallstatt, Upper Austria

Wonderfully quaint Austrian village nestled on the edge of a lake in the Alps. Here you will find the most picturesque square in Europe. I would highly recommend renting a boat for an hour or two and cruise around the lake. The Gruner Anger hotel was in a great location with excellent service.

  • 5. Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland
    Lauterbrunnen, Jungfrau Region

Heaven on earth! This area is breathtakingly beautiful. If you love the mountains, camping, adventure sports, etc, then this is the place for you. For the most amazing views, take the cable car up to Murren and walk the trail to Gimmelwald. Also camping Jungfrau is an excellent camp site located at the base of Staubach Falls.

  • 6. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
    Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Upper Bavaria

We have returned to the area multiple times during our time here in Europe. To get a true feel for Bavaria, this area is where you should visit. Garmish is in a beautiful location at the base of the German Alps. We always stay at the Landhaus Hohe Tannen. It is a typical German Gasthaus in a great location. Be sure to visit the quaint villages of Mittenwald and Oberammergau, which are located nearby. From late Nov. until Christmas is the best time to visit. All the towns and villages have Christmas markets that are truly magical. Stroll through the markets and enjoy some hot gluwein while you soak in the Christmas spirit. Germany is the best place in Europe to celebrate the Christmas season.

  • 7. Belgium
    Belgium, Europe

It is hard for me to say exactly why I love Belgium so much. We live near Belgium and have taken multiple short trips there. I have yet to see the two most popular Belgian destinations, Brussels and Brugge. That being said we have always had a wonderful experience in Belgium. The people are some of the friendliest in Europe. The Belgians revere their beer like the French and Italians do their wine. An excellent Belgian beer with a fresh waffle is a must for anyone visiting Belgium. So next time your in Europe make a stop at one of the many Belgian breweries and experience the best of Belgium.
