 Arriving in Indore, India

Have you discovered one of the many cheap flights to Indore, India, one of the country's most magnificent destinations? Well, congratulations, and welcome! This bustling metropolis blends India's glorious past with its future. Indore flights will more than likely land at the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport (code IDR), about eight kilometres from the city. The airlines servicing Indore range from luxury trips offered by Indian Airlines and Air Arabia, to tourist-friendly budget operators like SpiceJet and GoAir. Once you've gotten off one of the many available Indore flights, you'll need to make your way into the city itself; to get into Indore, there are bus and taxi services that connect the airport to the city.

Getting Around Indore

Indore has an excellent bus system serving a network of over 170 stops and stations. The coaches are considered the best in India and each has a section reserved for women travelling alone for comfort and safety. There is also the government-run Metro Taxi service. The cars are new and up-to-date with GPS and air-conditioning. The best way to catch a Metro Taxi is to call ahead or find a taxi stand at a railroad station or in the shopping district.

Indore also has private taxi and transport services including the Nagar Seva minibus service and the daredevil three-wheeled auto rickshaws. The final way to travel in Indore is to rent a car. Most rental cars in India include a driver because navigating city traffic is not for the novice. However, experienced travellers may rent a car by presenting a copy of their driver's license, passport, and credit card.

Main attractions in Indore

Indore is a captivating mixture of historical and modern architecture. A good place to learn about Indian culture is the Indore Museum. From there, visit the Lal Baag Palace with its spring-loaded ballroom floors, replica Buckingham Palace gates, and magnificent coin collection. The Kanch Mandir, meaning "temple of glass", was built in the early twentieth century by a cotton baron. Every inch of the building's interior is completely covered in glass and mirrored tiles and mosaics. Fifty special panels tell stories from the Jain tradition.

Other places of interest include the seven-story Rajwada, a melding of Maratha, Mughal, and French architecture, which stands like a feudal guard over the busy Khajuri Bazaar. Recently renovated after a devastating fire, the palace now includes a garden with fountains and 11th century sculpture.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife in Indore

Cheap flights to Indore bring travellers into the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, a city that offers a wide array of shopping. The Khadjuri Bazaar is a feast of open air sellers and small shops featuring books, art, and other paper goods. The Marothia Bazaar is the best place to shop for groceries and local arts and crafts. For the more sophisticated shopper, Indore has a large selection of showrooms and outlets for luxury goods and cloth. Jail Road is home to electronics and tailoring shops while the Heritage Market hosts names like Nike, Lee, and Van Hussein. For traditional Indian fashion and sarees, stop by the Sitlamata Bazaar.

Indore is also known for its dining. After a long day in the bazaars, sample a variety of traditional Indian cuisine in one of Indore's many restaurants. However, the prime eating and entertainment spot in Indore doesn't truly come alive until late at night. Dress up a bit and head to the Sarafa Market, the favourite destination for the gourmands of Indore. After dinner, visitors can sample delicious Indian desserts and drinks.
