Finding cheap flights to Diu, India can pose a bit of a challenge, unless you know a bit about this city and the area. The city of Diu is actually an island that’s situated just to the south of Gujarat, India. There are ferries and bridges that move passengers into the city, and it’s also accessible by plane through the Diu Airport, which provides access to Gujarat, Veraval and Jafrabad. This is a small airport, with the capacity to service only about 100 passengers at each of the halls. Jet Airways is the main airline flying into and out of the airport; it flies to and from Mumbai. Deccan Aviation provides access to Surat.
Once you arrive on one of the many Diu flights, you will need to travel by car to your destination. The island does not have a railway station. The nearest one is in Veraval, which is about 90 kilometres away. It is best to take the bus or a private taxi into Diu and then around to your destinations. The state-run buses will help travellers come from Ahmedabad into Diu, though this 370 kilometre trip can take up to 10 hours.
Once you get into the city, a popular type of travel mode is the auto rickshaws. They're relatively cheap and safe as well as very efficient, and will provide you with a quick trip to your next destination. If you're feeling even more adventurous, rent one of the motorized scooters or motorbikes (and be sure to secure yourself a helmet). This will enable you to have even more control of your city travels! The local roads and traffic can get a bit hairy - so be sure to wear your helmet and stay safe on the roads. You can also pack a good pair of shoes or boots and hoof it around to the attractions, although that might wear you out quickly!
Though cheap flights to Diu can be a bit difficult to obtain, once you arrive, there is plenty to do and see. Diu was a Portuguese colony from 1539 through 1961, and as such it has Portuguese architecture and traditions. Nevertheless, the Indian lifestyle is still present here. Plan to take the time to visit the older Portuguese churches located in the city. There are also Hindu temples with amazing detail that date back hundreds of years.
You can explore the entire island on the back of a scooter if you like, or you can visit the beaches. Nagoa Beach is a commercialized centre where you will find options for renting water sport equipment. There are also a number of restaurants in this area. Jalandhar Beach is a second option and has a very different atmosphere; it is more relaxed and isolated.
Diu flights bring tourists to a location with many options for shopping, dining and eating. The Nagoa Beach area is one of the best places to find all of these. Many of the restaurants here offer seafood dishes, and a few western options are also available. Most of the food here is served in a Gujarati style, as well as northern and southern Indian cuisine. It's quite delicious, so be sure to bring along your appetite!
As for the nightlife, do not expect to see too many uncrowded options for bars. Alcohol is legal in the city of Diu, unlike in its surrounding areas. This means that the area often sees a good amount of traffic and tourism for the drinking options. A few clubs and late-night restaurants are available - so just have some patience, and you should still be able to have a great time! If you're looking to shop, be sure to head to the Foreign Market or Princess Park to pick up some special treasures.
