My husband and I plan an mid August visit to McCarthy and will stay with friends there. We are looking for a couple of tours that are suitable for ages 65 to 70. We are in good(not excellent) physical shape and can walk/slow hike. The tours I see on line seem to be more strenuous than we would like. We hope to visit the mine. A fishing day would be good or a boat tour (not white water raft). Is there any suggestions you may have? We will be there for one week and will fly back to Anchorage (so, flight tours are not needed).
Thanks for your interest in our trips! Our half-day glacier hike is a great option for what you are looking for. Hiking on a glacier is often the highlight of many people's trip to Alaska. Our half-day covers 5-6 miles in about 4-5 hours. We have options to join a group or book a private guide. We do not offer fishing but we do offer tours in private boats called Packrafts that don't always involve white water. Packrafting with us is a unique and amazing experience because you have a chance to paddle your own boat in a glacial lake with a view of Stairway Icefall. If you have any more questions please feel free to call or visit our website!
The mine is just up the road from McCarthy, you can get on one of the tours, You do climb a lot of stairs.
I would suggest you take a flight tour as the small planes fly much lower and you can some great views of the glacier. The airport is right there near McCarthy. There is really nothing in McCarthy to speak of, hope you aren't expecting much.
