Monocacy National Battlefield Questions & Answers

Florida

Planning a trip around various National Parks and I'd like to include Moncacy. One previous visitor said that the roads really require and SUV. Because I don't drive an SUV, are the roads really that bad? And how much hiking is involved in this park? Thank you.

Absolutely NO need for a SUV. The Park HQ & Museum is asphalt. If you want to drive to a particular house the road is gravel and NO SUV is necessary.

I drove a car and I went to every location on the battlefield. Only as much hiking as you want to do. Most of the information signs are no more than a short stroll from where you park the car. I believe there are six hikes for the person who is looking to hike, but you will not be missing the historical information here if you don't hit these trails.

I drove a rented Nissan Versa to each location...no problem. The visitors center is very good, it provides an interesting history lesson. The different sights are good, get out and walk the trails if able.

agreed, NO NEED FOR AN SUV! We tooled around in my wife's chevy sonic, no problems. just gravel. It's a very nice park and great Civil War info and easy to navigate to the various sites.

The roads are easy to navigate, SUV not necessary. Walking is well designated with signs, mostly flat, easy to access. You can do as much or as little as you like and still see a great deal.

you do not need an SUV. honestly all the NPS managed battlefields are easily accessible without an SUV. The walking at Monocacy is in four different areas. two of them have a few good walking options through the forest (1+miles). The other two are less than a mile. Very easy and mostly flat.

happy travels.

I drive a Hyundai Sonata, and I made it on the roads just fine. SUV not necessary. As for hiking, there are a few trails. There is one that is two miles long, but there are not major hills.

There are not that many roads. Please visit the Visitors Center and take the entire tour on the 2nd floor. SO Much history there including a lighted description of the battle that "saved" Washington. Ask for a Nat'l Parks Ranger to accompany you on a tour of the facilities. That is there job! don't let them say no. they are very accommodating. That is there job!

We drove on paved roads only, and visited a few of the old farm sites where battles occurred. Most of the walking is level grade. There is a pleasant short hike at one, through woods and along meadows. I am sure there is much more walking one could do, if desired.

No, there must be a misunderstanding. You do not need a SUV at Monocacy.

I agree with Vicki above. Most of the park beyond the visitor center can be driven to, but I didn't find any place a car can't handle easily. And you can choose to do just a short part of the park, or stop at more of the specific battle areas and monuments if you wish.

Oh my.......SUV??? Really???? We drove our minivan and were just fine! I don't see where an SUV would be required at all. Unless the other folks did some 'illegal' off-road touring. The roads that involved with this site and very easy drives. Very little hiking is required. Nothing strenuous at all. We really enjoyed visiting here. Go for it and have FUN!!!
