The Twentymile Cascades in the great Smoky Mountains National Park and then the Yellow Creek Falls in the Nantahala National Forest are the closest waterfalls.

Yes. Meigs Falls, Bald River Falls, Juney Whank Falls, lots more. Many are in or near Bryson City. Just GTS.

The resort is up in the mountains,we did not find any.

However many on the Cherokee side of the GSM Park.

In the park as well.

We did enjoy going to Fontana Dam

Yes, we stopped at one along the side of the road about 2-3 miles away from the Fontana Village entrance (we took a short video of it/wish I could post it here)

I walked the Appalachian Trail from the beginning at Amicalola Falls State Park in Virginia and at least along the major artery of the Appalachian Trail there were no waterfalls to be seen, just plenty of climbs and descents.

I'm sorry I really do not know. We were driving to the "Tail of the Dragon" not there for hiking. The Fontana Dam is pretty cool though. As for waterfalls I would check on Fontana Village web site or give them a call.
