Airport Mesa Questions & Answers

Hi there, I am visiting Sedona later on this month and really want to visit the vortex site at Aiport Mesa. Do you know how I get to the vortex site without having to do a long hike? Many thanks, Emily

You can actually drive up and hike down ~ or park at the bottom and hike up. The Airport Mesa is actually a really good place to see the sunset, too. AND - the entire canyon is "sacred" and there are hundreds of trails in Oak Creek Canyon and beyond that will remind you that this is a very special place on the planet. You will LOVE Sedona ~ and hopefully get a chance to go to the Grand Canyon, too ~ Have fun!!

This is right in the heart of town off Airport Road. It is a 10 minute hike with stair cut into the stone. It is not wheelchair accessible.

The hike is fairly steep- I recommend earlier in the day to hike to avoid the heat. Vortex is at the top where you will get 360 degree view of the incredible Sonoma Landscape. If you are looking for a flat hi8ke this is not it- it is very short however.

I hiked from the parking lot at the top of airport rd down the hill to the summit area where you have to climb the summit itself. It wasn't a horrible hike, I'm 52yo and managed fine although I did take my time. I never 'felt' the vortex or anything out of the ordinary. The views were beautiful though. I went at sunrise.

Take Airport Road. On your left part way up is a parking area. The vortex is a short, but uphill hike from the parking lot. I also recommend driving up to the top of Airport Mesa. There is a parking lot there on the left. Cross back over the road to the overlook. Spectacular view.

I am sorry I don't we didn't hike from the airport. I can tell you that there is plenty of parking at the entrance to the trail at the airport trail entrance. I hope you have as much fun hiking in the area as our family did.

You can find a vortex map. "lovesedona" has a great one. The vortex is but a short walk. Easily seen. It's an awesome place and you can see Sedona more than 180 degrees. Living here is a blessing.

Great idea as it is not a long hike to the vortex and the view is stunning. There is a parking area just below the vortex with limited spots, if it is filled wait a few minutes as the cars do come out with regularity. The climb is easy to the top, about 3 minutes.

When we were up there there was a spiritual guy was playing a didgeridoo. He offered to play it over us while we lay on the vortex. He warned we would feel very emotional which was the case. After the vortex head up to the look out at the top of the mesa and then have a nice meal at the Airport resto, which is really good.

Also worth your time is going out to one of the wineries just outside of town. A trip up to Jerome is also a must and if you can do the drive from Jerome to Prescott then do so. Also drive the Oak Creek Canyon from Sedona to Flagstaff.

Lunch at Enchantment or at L'Auberge by the river are wonderful experiences in Sedona. I rented there for month in 16 so got to know the place pretty well.

I might end repeating what others have already say. The Vortex offers quite a great view for a short stroll, as I considered it not even a trail walk being just 50 meters (or less) from the parking area which is pretty small and it's your only option if you don't want to do much walking from the Mesa's parking lot on the top end of the road (check an scale map to figure out the distance in case you change your mind and decide to do the walking down and up on your way back). The Vortex parking is for 10 (or even less) cars on the left side on your way up towards Airport Mesa. You cannot missed it as it is the first and only parking before Airport Mesa. So, drive slowly to not passed it because by turning around you will miss any empty spot sure to be taken by the ones driving behind you. The "trail" is so short that you can see the top of your destiny from the parking lot but is stiff even though it counts with cable lines to help you both ways (are on the left side of the ascent. Take your time checking your way so you don't miss it. Now, Here is my suggestion for a easy walk with a great reward: On the right side of the Vortex Trail is the Airport Mesa Trail going South East. Walking it for a short hundred meters will grand you an open view of the most iconic rock formations without been blocking each other one in front of the other as it will be by watching them from the Vortex. If you go for the view, you have a better reward doing this short part of the trail without need to do any accent as the Vortex demanded (not a big deal neither been me a 60's old guy). Now, If you are going to the Vortex to experience the "charging" experience, well sorry but be ready to be disappointed as not all can say they got something out of it. I didn't despise being an open minded person and all. Good luck and ask me if you need some more explaining. If you see my pictures about the Mesa: Those are the kind of view I'm talking about to catch from the short suggested trail!!!..:)
