We are hoping to do hike the Tongariro Crossing in early November, and are looking for a place to stay that is convenient, comfortable, and that has transport to and from the trailheads. How far are the trailheads? Is there shuttle service? Thanks
Trails are practical on the door step , a wee distance to the ski fields but November no snow, the powder horn is the perfect place to use as a headquarters.
There several websites that will help. Have a look at the website .visitohakune. and tongarirocrossing
Shuttles are definitely available and the Powderhorn maybe able to assist in bookings.
Yes Ohahuke is the town to stay, this where The Powderhorn Chateau is.
A Shuttle service can collect you early in the morning and drop you back at the end of the day for around $35 per person.
From memory the drive time is approx 45mins to an hour to the beginning of the track and maybe 1 hr to 1.15 hr on the return. They allow you 9 hrs to walk the track.
FYI. Don't attempt the Mount Ngauruhoe summit on the same journey unless you are extremely fit and fast. Ngauruhoe summit is at least 2hrs if you are fit.
I can't add the actual website link on this site for you. But Google Tongariro Apline Crossing and you will find a contact email for the shuttle service.
