I will be arriving at this hotel in about a week and I am curious, how long is the walk from the hotel to the Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square?

Hi,

I agree with Godiver. It is better to walk back from the FB, than to walk there. You will be quite tired if you walk both directions (we were there in July when it was sweltering).

We ended up taking the metro to Tiananmen Square, toured the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park and stopping for lunch before walking back to the Hutongs. It took us about 40 mins to walk back at a quick-moderate pace. Go as early as you can as it is super crowded with long lines.

If you have time, visit Ben Hai Park - we enjoyed this more than the Forbidden City, and all of the water lilies were in bloom at the time - great photo ops everywhere (need about 90 mins. to stroll the entire park).

Have a great trip!

Thanks for all the quick responses, I have a few days in Beijing and I plan to spend my first full day walking from the drum and bell towers to the lama temple and exploring the hutongs(as it's a Monday and the Forbidden city is closed) my second day will pretty much be devoted to Tiananmen and the forbidden city, I'm fairly athletic and love walking cities but the consensus seems to be to take a cab there so that's what I'll do! Thanks friends!

We did it in June and it took about 45 minutes to an hour. If you are planning on visiting the Forbidden City anyway, it's better to do it in reverse - take the metro from Nanluoguxiang to Tiananmen and then walk through the Forbidden City, where you exit at the North, and then, if you have time, through Jingshan Park. It's then about a further 15 minutes to South Luogu Alley and a further 5 or 10 minutes through the Alley to the hotel.

We have walked to Tiananmen Square from the hotel. In our opinion, it is not worth the effort. Take an inexpensive taxi. Save your walking for the old city area around the hotel and Drum tower. When you go to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, start your day at Tiananmen Square and then walk through the gate/wall entrance leading to the Forbidden City. If you elect to see the Forbidden City first, it will be a long walk around the moats and wall to Tiananmen Square. You can not enter Tiananmen Square through the gated wall from the Forbidden City.

It would be long walk, but its a great walk to go south through the hutong and get a taxi for a very direct ride. Taxis are very cheap, fun and easy.
