Do we need a guide for the Kasbah? Algiers is a port of call on our cruise in early March, 2017. If so, how can we find one?
I Just walked around using my GPS and Google maps on Android. make a list of places That you want to visit beforehand and start Walking. The area is totally safe during daytime (have no experience for night) still carry your valuables in safe manner. it is near the port so no need for taxi or transport if you are fit. if you need a walker or wheelchair this place is not for you.
Then I guess our problem is finding a local guide. We'll be coming in on a cruise ship for the day. I looked online--the one I saw never answered , and no Tours by Locals....
I believe it would be best to have a guide to find the places that matter, my guide/driver was provided by the hotel. I would expect the cruise company or port office would know of guides available. Enjoy your cruise. Philip
I did a walk through the Kasbah by my own and found it not to difficult. If you go the upstairs all the time you will end up at the fortress anyhow. Use Google Maps on your cell phone or a similiar map tool. Nevertheless, you should inform yourself by use of a travel guide so you don't miss the best spots.
Safety was no issue, but we were two men walking around. Be always aware of pickpocketing when it is crowded. Don't show your wallet, camera or cell phone to clearly.
hi Zelda, towfik is right, however being with a local guide is much safer.. it's about $ 30 for a great local guide who can speak English fluently & SAFETY DOES MATTER
Most travel agents in Algiers will be able to provide a guide.
Yes, a local guide is necessary, otherwise you will end up missing some interesting buildings/places and lots of information about the history of the Casbah. I live in Algiers and I found the guide very useful.
Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately, we have recently found out that Americans need a visa for Algeria, and the cruise ship is not allowing us onshore if not on a booked tour. I am very disappointed we won't be able to visit the Kasbah, but we will visit Tipasa instead.
