Matachica Resort & Spa Questions & Answers

Palo Alto, California

We are thinking of going to this resort in Jan 2019, however I’m worried about the issues with seaweed that others have raised in reviews. I don’t mind accessing the water via the dock (vs beach) but I don’t want to deal with a bad smell. For those that traveled there in or around January of 2018, is there a smell during that time of year?

The seaweed (sargassum) is a real concern (very thick and VERY smelly), that said the Matachica does have the cleanest beach area of what we have seen (they seem to have people working on it all day).

It kind of depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for - if you are planning to be snorkeling/diving/kayaking/sailing and being out on the reef (like us) the seaweed isn’t a big deal, but if you want to lounge on the beach, I would give it a miss.

Hope that helps!

There was no smell from the turtle grass. Matachica does a great job raking the sand every morning so there isn’t as much seaweed as other areas of the island.

The resorts absolutely should have warned us beforehand but its all about the mighty dollar and figured once they get you there where are you going to go ?

If you are a water person and like to swim, I would not recommend any resort on this island. The seaweed line starts approximately 3 feet from shore. You really can't access the water to swim from the dock because the end of the dock is where the boat traffic runs up and down the island.

The shore line once you leave the resort is full of trash on either side. The barrier reef creates a funnel for all of the ocean and sea trash to wash ashore.

I wish I had been better informed before we spent so much money and never went into the water.

I won return because of the seaweed, and the ridiculous, horrible music this place plays in the resort. It could be great, but those things are deal killers!

We didn’t notice any smell during our early January trip, the beach was cleaned/raked a couple times a day and kept in immaculate condition. We took the kayaks out daily and snorkeled around the reef. I was sad by the amount of trash in the water but it wasn’t so bad I’d get out of the water, mostly disgusted with mankind for not taking better care of planet earth. We also did one of their snorkel trips which was amazing with all the fish and coral. We’ve traveled all over the world and this is one of the best places we’ve ever stayed...and we are very picky!

There are so many other places to go, why suffer with this seaweed issue ? If I had known we never would have booked here.

Did not notice any bad smell - the seaweed as I remember is below the water level and quite healthy. There are loungers on the beach and on the pier. We had lovely, peaceful mornings reading a looking out on the lagoon not noticing the seaweed.
