Potentially driving up from LA towards San Fran. Would like to see the bridge, I hear it's only open from the north on the 1? Has anyone done this recently and can confirm either way..?
Need to approach from the north, but it's not a very long drive from Carmel by the Sea and it's a pretty drive with lots of pull outs
Highway 1 is closed at two locations south of the Bixby Bridge. The Pfeiffer canyon bridge is being replaced in Big Sur and won't open until late September 2017. The Mud Creek Slide 45 minutes south of Big Sur took out more than 1500 feet of Highway 1, reopening of the section is unknown at this time. So the only way to access Bixby Bridge is from the North. But well worth the drive.
You can still access Bixby Bridge if you are driving from San Francisco to Big Sur via Monterey/Carmel Hwy 1. There's a lot to see along the way and view points for pull out.
Haven't driven through very recently, but if Pfeiffer Bridge is closed use 101 and come back to Bixby bridge from the north side even if it means a small detour. The view of the Big Sur, the beaches below and the Pacific ocean, is too stunning to miss.
You will have to drive in from north side of highway 1 to see it. there are couple of spots nearby to pull over which can help.
