There is a very small public beach within walking distance . However the sand was rocky and the lake is very cold. We did not swim but did see the beach.

Hello, we were in Varenna at the beginning of the season in early April. I did not observe any sandy beaches nearby, nor any swimmers. I remember reading Rick Steves Guidebooks on the Italian Lake country. (Varenna was his favorite place in that region.) I believe he said something to the effect that there are very few places on Lake Como (or Maggiore) for swimming. This is odd because several restaurants were serving local fish that they said were caught in the lake. Actually, I would suggest that you reach out to the hotel Du Lac and ask about it. You may hear back quickly, probably from Valeria, one of the owners. She will give you good, honest information. Don't forget that it's a big lake, and to get around, there are many ferries and boat services available, so you may be able to easily get to a beach for swimming.

I hope this helps. We really enjoyed the hotel, and the folks that worked there. Feel free to ask follow-up questions. Ciao! Steve

Although this hotel does not have swimming access, it is a short walk along the lake to a beach. This is a quaint hotel which we loved and would not hesitate to stay at again.

Plus...if the weather is around 70 (high) in September, who would want to swim in a lake?

Not really. There might be a pool at a hotel in another lakeside town, but in Varenna, nothing other than the lake near the stone boat landing area. I wouldn't want to swim there.

It was April when we were there and the lake was very cold. We saw lots of people in boats, but no swimmers. I'm sure that if you contact the hotel they can answer your question. They can also let you know the temperature of the lake in Sept.

The property is on the lake. You can swim in the lake in the areas designated for swimming.
