How far is the nearest beach, and can you swim there? Is it a sandy or pebbles beach?
The Serrapo beach in Gaeta is the most perfect beach. There are areas where you can rent a chaise lounge and umbrella .... just sit on one and the beach boy will gone get your money ... I don't know how much bc we didn't do this . We went in the areas where you can just lay on the clean beautiful sand.... close to the freshest water u will ever swim in. The beach is perfect. There are caves you can swim to as well! If U drive north on the bus Flaca toward Sperlonga there are s number of beaches worth visiting as well.... these are full service beaches u get a chaise lounge and umbrella for 5 euro .... we did one of these .... it was also excellent. And we also visited the public beach at Sperlinga and walked their downtown area ..... so much to see and do !!!
Sorry, I just spotted your question about Gaeta. The nearest beaches that we went to are about a 2 minute drive or taxi ride away. I'm not sure how long it would take to walk; perhaps 15 minutes? The beach was lovely and sandy, but it was a cool, partially cloudy day so we didn't venture into the water, just lazed on beach chairs at a private section of the beach.
If you haven't been before, there are often privately managed sections of the beach and you can pay a modest fee to use it, pay a little more to rent a beach chair, umbrella, etc. Sometimes there are little bars or restaurants there too.
Depending on your travel plans, Paestum, south of the Amalfi coast area, is an interesting place with Greek temples and lots of beautiful resorts along the coast which can be surprisingly reasonable, depending upon time of year.
I absolutely LOVE traveling in Italy!!
