I'd like to know what the credit card charges are please. We have heard of some really excessive credit card fees in Costa Rica.
Sorry for the late reply. Bring cash cause yes the card charges really add up in the end.
Thank you everyone for your answers!
I say bring cash. Cash (USD) is much more accepted and they will give you a little more for your buck due to the exchange rate. You can use your atm card there and fees will be dependent on your bank. I'm not sure what you're referring to as we didn't have an issue when we stayed there. Hope this helps!
Thanks so much for answering but I did figure it out. Someone kept saying that the charge to use a credit card for your hotel in Costa Rica was 13% - that's actually the VAT not the credit card fee.
I appreciate the additional info too!
We have been to Costa Rice 3 times in the last 4 years, if you have any more questions I will be happy to tell you anything we can to help. We love it there.
We typically take local currency for incidental expenses and food. We have used our credit card for rental cars and a lodging in Drake Bay but have not had excessive extra charges. It is best to contact your cardholder and they should be able to provide you with exactly what, if any, fees you will be charged using your particular card. The biggest change in costs is rental cars. If you book your car on one of the travel websites be prepared for a big sticker shock when you arrive due to mandatory insurance laws. What once was $500 for about 12 days is now more like $1300 due to the insurance change. Pura Vida!!
