We loved NCL Joy in 2023 and booked NCL Getaway to the Caribbean for April 7 – 19, 2024. We will never do the Getaway again. THE GOOD STUFF: The entertainment was great. The exceptional restaurants were La Cucina, Moderno Steakhouse, Shanghai Noodle, and O’ Sheehan’s. The Taste and Savor restaurants were average. The initial boarding and final exit off the ship were the best experiences we have ever had, and we cruise a lot. The bar staff was great. We did 3 wine tastings – ALL GREAT. THE NEGATIVES: (1) FOOD: The buffet was very limited and average. Asked for bananas daily (“check again later or tomorrow”) – only saw them the last day with green skins. The omelet station offered ONE cheese (dark cheddar, crumbled - the hard cheese you eat with crackers). People would bring American cheese from the cold cuts section to have a different cheese in their omelets. The fruit was not sweet (except for the watermelon). The strawberries and blueberries were obviously frozen (still partially frozen with that wet, filmy look). We liked lunch at the American Diner and went back for breakfast. The bacon was VERY undercooked and the selection SO limited, we went back to the main buffet. We ate at the Tropicana twice - my husband was sick after both meals. Once, his steak was overcooked. When they brought it back, it was UNDER cooked and not edible - we just left. (2) CLEANLINESS: Our steward was great, but the rooms were sometimes not freshened before 4 pm. The common area “automatic” toilets repeatedly did not work and were dirty - we went back to our room. The bar overlooking the atrium was not clean. We are used to seeing employees cleaning around the ship – not so many on this one. By the end of the trip, my husband and I both had respiratory issues (coughing, sore throat). While standing on line to get ship credit, I talked to two RANDOM passengers whose husbands were also sick with respiratory illnesses (3) SAILING SMOOTHNESS: The ship was CONSTANTLY swaying (we don’t get seasick, so we made light of it). Each night not only did it rock, but it creaked like an old house. During the last 2 days to NYC it was somewhat less. (4) ENTERTAINMENT: The first two comedians were not funny (the juggling comedian was good). We could never get into Sid Norman’s Pour House (tried 50 minutes ahead of the show – no seats). On NCL Joy, we saw the Beatles Tribute Show twice – was great! (also a small venue).

This was my first experience with a cruise and it definitely made me feel that I should never do it again. Everything On this ship is a pay wall and definitely not worth it for the quality of what you get…even In The crappiest hotels , I could watch tv and use Wi-Fi without having to buy a damn package as if the cost of the cruise wasn’t expensive enough. The food was horrible , the activities throughout the day are geared towards old people and opportunists looking to get some free item or discount on some crappy merchandise. I was supposed to be In Bermuda for three days , the itinerary was changed and we only docked for 6hrs . This cruise was to be 7 days , Sunday to the following Sunday and even though we could’ve been back in New York at least two days ago, this captain chose to drag on and coast this sorry floating day care slower than needed. Certain shades of People with self entitled kids who didnt watch there children , as they dart around the dining area and the hallways banging on stateroom doors was absolutely appalling and made this way worse.. now let’s get to the garbage they feed you in the garden cafe , meals they created by re using ingredients from that day’s breakfast or Lunch.. only to re sauce them with something, and call them by another name. The scrambled eggs were always watery , the desserts were always dry and in the form of some kind of wiggly texture. Then they don’t tell you that you are being charged $20 per day per person in your stateroom for steward gratuity, only when u inquire about your bill climbing steadily do they inform u that u can sign a waiver and tip for your services. Which means if you decide not to get your bed made that day , your being charged anyway.. what a rip off !!. If I ever decide to endure this type of travel again it will not be with NCL, it was a horrible experience from start to finish. Then the kicker was the. Offering 20% off on my next cruise since they cancelled our stay in Bermuda , as if that was somehow equal compensation for being stuck on that boring ship 5 of the 7 days of my vacation. Never Again !

We've taken a few NCL cruises, so we generally know what to expect. The food is going to be varied and, in general, delicious. The drinks package is worth it if you can manage 2-3 cocktails a day (somehow, we managed). There are loads of free entertainments that are really solid -- as good as Broadway theater, to be honest (and I'm saying this as a lifelong New Yorker). And the casino experience is solid, too, though it is GROSS that they allow smoking in the casino. There are plenty of fun activities for kids and people of all ages and fitness.

Included food was mediocre, really no taste; however, Teppanyaki Hibachi was fantastic!!! Crew on the ship overall were great and friendly. Onboarding took us 3 hours in line and getting off was literally 3,000 people getting out at the same time. No organization!!! The cabin was okay, however, they have awful entertainment. The games are terrible!!! They really need to work on that!! Lots of room for improvement, however, I don't think that I will be cruising Norweigan anymore.

Ship was over 4 hours late departing. Check in was a disaster, took 3 hours of waiting in lines to board the boat. Also, parking was $315 for the week. Food is beyond terrible. I ate oatmeal and cereal everyday. We even ate at a speciality restaurant, Ocean Blue, and our meals were disgusting. People next to us were sending them back as well. Savory, Taste, Tropicana all of the included restaurants were serving the same food and it was awful. No flavor. The buffet has the same exact items for every meal every day. The only relief we got is when we got to our port and got to eat off the boat. Supposed to spend 3 days at our port and only spent 2 due to a technical issue with the speed of the boat. Also, arriving 5 1/2 hours late to our arrival port for departure to go home due to this technical issue. THEY CHARGE A $20 PER PERSON PER DAY SERVICE CHARGE FEE. I asked about this and was told it was for all the "behind the scenes workers" and separate from the $400 in gratuities we already paid. An extra $280 I wasn't expecting. Also, while you are still ported in NYC if you get a drink or food they will charge you NYC tax to your room. Got charged about $15 in tax for what we ate and drank while docked in NYC. Never ever ever again.
