What travellers are saying
- Jim L21 contributionsVMI has a very interesting campus with unique building architecture. There is a nice stone pathway behind campus. There are several display maps on campus that show this path. We walked it and found many exercise/drill stations along the route. It would have been interesting seeing some of the students working out here. Great walk......give it a go.Written 14 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- MidwestKathMDetroit, MI934 contributionsWhile visiting the Washington and Lee University Campus, we spent a couple hours visiting the Chapel and Museums. University Chapel, originally Lee Chapel, was built in the late 1860s during Robert E Lee's tenure as college president. He died there while serving, so the Chapel is essentially an homage to him. In the apse is the Recumbent Lee, memorializing Lee for his service to the institution. Below is the Lee Family Crypt and Lee's office, as he left it upon falling ill two weeks before his death. Just a short walk from the Chapel are the two museums. We started with the Reeves Museum of Ceramics, which houses a large collection of ceramics that includes American, European, Chinese, and Japanese pieces. We enjoyed the exhibition of Native Women Pueblo artists and a demonstration of Monacan pottery. The Watson Galleries had an interesting exhibition of Japanese ceramics.Written 16 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MidwestKathMDetroit, MI934 contributionsIn Lexington, Virginia on business, we had some time to visit the Washington and Lee University campus for a few hours. The designated campus parking and on the adjacent streets is often filled, so we went to a parking garage near the Visitor Center where you can park free with no limits. Back on campus, where some trees were already flowering, we were drawn to Washington Hall, an impressive white building with columns and a portico and dome with a statue of George Washingotn on top, built in the 1820s! Next we visited University Chapel, built in the late 1860s when Robert E Lee was the president there. It's an unassuming brick building with a spire, and lots of R.E. Lee history inside. We visited the nearby Watson Gallery and Reeves Museum of Ceramics. Tried to get lunch at the University Commons but the Cafe and Market were under renovation. Attended a show at the Lenfest Center for the Arts, and checked out their art galleries. A nice day on a beautiful walkable campus!Written 16 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Anne SwanWinchester, VA122 contributionsIt was our first time at this venue. The list of acts available this summer was wonderful. But I didn’t learn about the venue in time to see sone. We attended a Garrison Keillor event.
The gates open at the designated time. It is a short drive to the parking. There are several choices of parking lots. All parking is in a grassy field.
Seating is available in several ways: sit on the benches in the amphitheater; sit on chairs provided above the benches; bring your own chairs or blankets and sit in the grassy area. Any seating area would be ok.
There are a couple of food vendors. You may bring you own food ONLY in the parking area. You may NOT bring your own food or beverages into the theatre area. I didn’t have any of the good from the vendors but I saw other people’s orders and the food looked good.
Restrooms were clean.
Events tend to sell out quickly. I estimate a sold out event would be about 600 people. They say they have parking for 300 cars.
I sent an e-mail question which received a reply from their staff with 24 hours.Written 10 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Cyrus McCormick invented the reaper in 1800's that changed farming. A nice easy walking trail to the mill pond with signage pointing out native flora and fauna. Nice picnic spot--clean and peaceful.Written 18 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Matt PGainesville, VA1,389 contributionsOne of two places where Stonewall is buried. His left arm is located in another city. The statue is nicely done. It is free so stop and by and toss a lemon on his gravesite.Written 16 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
