Kalman was great. He took us through many areas of the old city and provided a fascinating account of the sites we visited and shared interesting anecdotes which brought history alive. He was very knowledgeable and had a slew of information at his fingertips. All of us from the adults, teens and kids, really enjoyed the tour. We would highly recommend using Kalman!

Required visit for anyone interested in learning about the Jewish People or specifically the Holocaust.
Even if you visited years ago, the newer curated exhibits are much more accessible than the old museum.

    PROS
    * The number one visited tourist spot in Israel
    * A holy and spiritual place- the site of Jewish religious prayer and devotion
    * History of almost 4000 years with intact archaeological remnains 2000+ years ago
    * The world's largest (and only) open air synagogue- close-up and personal observation of Jewish prayer rituals
    * Open 24/7

    CONS
    * It can be crowded and congested and very disorganized
    * People asking for charity money- it's benign and not dangerous nor threatening
    * A strange combination of intense spirituality in the prayer rituals and those fervent supplicants at the Wall as compared to the often holiday festive atmosphere in the plaza, as tour groups and family and friends meet and socialize
    * Airplane type security inspection for to admission to the broad Western Wall Plaza.

    "I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... with my two teenagers for the annual Grand Hosanna holiday celebration party, which started this year at 0540am, almost an entire hour before sunrise. There were dozens of simultaneous prayer groups- 20,000 people. There was a cacophony of competing and interfering sounds and noises of all the different prayer groups. We circled the stand seven times, while waving our palm fronds with citron and myrtle branches and then we pounded our five willow branches five times on the paving stones, all the while with our fringed prayer shawls dangling over our heads.

    WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
    It is free.

    WOULD I VISIT HERE AGAIN?
Sure- it's one of a kind and incredible

    ADVICE
    * Be sure to visit this number one tourist attraction
    * Be sure to dress appropriately and be respectful and quiet
    * Observe but do not disturb those engaged in their fervent prayer devotions
    * It is permitted to reverently approach the Wall and leave a note between the massive stones, which is only a tourist thing: we never did it and never do it

A visit to Jerusalem is like no other in that it is a truly religious city for many different people. The city itself is undergoing enormous regeneration and the buildings are very well designed. The bus service is like no other and can take you all over the country at very cheap prices. The light rail runs through the centre of town and the new Main line station, Navon has to be experienced. The trains are new, modern and very clean and access is down five escalators. The journey to Tel Aviv is partly underground which is a pity as it is not possible to see all the land which is wonderful.

As a devout believer in Jesus, my visit to Montes das Oliveiras was an incredibly profound and spiritual experience. However, even for those who may not share the same religious beliefs, this destination offers breathtaking views that are sure to leave you in awe. Prepare to be captivated by the natural beauty and the historical significance that Montes das Oliveiras has to offer.

Upon arriving at Montes das Oliveiras, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere that permeates the area. The peacefulness and tranquility create the perfect ambiance for prayer, meditation, and reflection. For believers, this is a place where you can connect with your faith on a deep level and feel the power and presence of Jesus. The atmosphere is imbued with a sense of reverence and spirituality, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a sacred experience.

Apart from its religious significance, Montes das Oliveiras boasts breathtaking views that are nothing short of spectacular. As I stood atop the hill, I was greeted with a panoramic vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. The rolling landscape, covered in lush green olive trees, seemed to extend endlessly, painting a picturesque scene. The gentle breeze, the warm sunlight, and the symphony of chirping birds added to the enchanting ambiance of the place. I could easily spend hours simply admiring the beauty that surrounded me.

One particular highlight of my visit was witnessing the Apocalypse Gates. These ancient gates hold immense historical and biblical importance. Standing before them, I couldn't help but marvel at the stories and events that unfolded within their vicinity. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the rich history and the profound impact this region has had on countless individuals throughout the ages. Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply appreciate the grandeur of ancient architecture, the Apocalypse Gates are sure to leave a lasting impression.

In addition to its spiritual and scenic allure, Montes das Oliveiras offers easy access to other significant landmarks in the region. Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Church of All Nations and the Garden of Gethsemane, which hold deep religious significance and provide further insight into the history of the area.

Overall, Montes das Oliveiras is a destination that transcends religious boundaries. Whether you visit to deepen your faith or simply to soak in the stunning views, this place will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. The combination of its spiritual aura, breathtaking vistas, and historical importance makes it a must-visit location for anyone traveling to Israel. Prepare to be moved, inspired, and mesmerized by the wonders of Montes das Oliveiras.

    PROS
    * Amazing archaeological excavations of Jewish life here 2000 years ago, in the time of Jesus- new discoveries all the time
    * An essential experience for all tourists to Jerusalem
    * Choice of more than one tour path
    * Exciting adventure of walking and exploring in dark sometimes damp labyrinthine passageways
    * Stand at the hidden holiest part of the holy Western Wall
    * Regular tours in English
    * Extremely reasonably prices at 25NIS per adult

    CONS
    * It is always crowded and darkened- one can get lost
    * Tickets are limited and must be purchased in advance
    * One needs fair agility to traverse the place, and no anxiety about crowded enclosed places to walk through
    * Only accessible as part of an organized impromptu tour and it can be hard to hear the speaker/lecturer tour guide because of the number of people in the group, your distance from the speaker, the sound acoustics in the tunnel and maybe other nearby competing tour groups.

    "I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as an activity for two teenagers. I had done it at least twice 10-15 years ago and i had entered the start of the massive excavations 45+ years ago too.

After registering on line and then being officially registered on site, we received an identity band and joined our tour guide.

The place was quite crowded- there were multiple competing tour groups going in different directions in the underground passageways.

I very much enjoyed our tour to the Great Bridge. i especially enjoyed and marveled and was thrilled at being so close to the hidden Western Wall with its smooth perfectly preserved stones, and also seeing the preserved remnants of the bridge as well as the intact theatre area. My group enjoyed it too.

    WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
    Of course

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Of course- I would then do one of the other tours

    ADVICES
    * Be sure to go- be sure to register and pay online
    * Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time- know where the main entrance is (to the left of the Western Wall plaza as you stand facing it)- directly behind the many water sinks on the men's side
    * Be prepared to enter a crowded darkened underground subterranean tunnels- watch your step- not dangerous but probably not for people with limited mobility
    * Be prepared to learn of the Jewish history and presence here for well over 2000 years, and to see it
    * Be sure to be able to hear your tour guide, and not get distracted by other groups, and to not get separated from the group and then lose your way during your adventure

This humble garden resonates with Christians. The Garden of Gethsemane is the place where Jesus went through the agony of betrayal and suffering the night before he was arrested. The next day, Jesus was crucified, dead and buried, before his resurrection. All four Gospels agree on Jesus' suffering and fate. The Garden of Gethsemane is at the base of the Mount of Olives.

Walking through history but watch your step. Prepare for the spring water to be cold. Bring a waterproof flashlight. Do not wear flip-flop or shoes that will come off while walking as you are walking through water from ankle to thigh depth. There are potholes where you could twists an ankle, this isn’t for those who have difficulty walking. There are narrows and areas that require sidesteping, bending and stooping. We will do it again.

The Garden Tomb is believed to be the site of the burial of Jesus. The location is related to Jerusalem. The site of the Garden Tomb is supported by evangelical Christians, and Mormons. Orthodox Christians support the Holy Sepulcher as the site of Christ's. resurrection. The Garden Tomb is interesting.

An amazing cultural experience! Full of life, with great stalls and restaurants. A must-do in Jerusalem. We were there one a Friday afternoon, so perhaps the vibe was extra lively because it was right before Shabbat (not sure!).

We participated in a guided tour (free of charge) of the site which was interesting. Our guide was pleasant and patient, very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions to the best of his ability. The view from the wall surrounding the citadel, both towards the old city and the Mount of Olives and towards the western city, is spectacular. But, the floor in the women's restroom was filthy and remained so even after two hours, even though I called the attention of the receptionist at the entrance to the site and noticed that she called a cleaning worker. It is not enough to call, you also need to make sure that the task is carried out.
