We highly recommend Bamberg as a destination. It is located on the canals of the Regnitz River, in northern Bavaria and is a UNESCO site. We selected it as a stopover and ending up staying for 10 days. There are endless things to do here, from sighting in the old town, to long walks around the town for exercise. Our mornings began with a big round trip walk along the river. Breakfast in one of the cafes before returning to the accommodation to get ready for a day of sighting in the many attractions. Food is excellent everywhere: we usually have a big lunch and not much for dinner. We did the touristy river cruise, which was exceptional and we learned more about the town.

This is the most famous building in Bamberg and a common German tourist photo. The building is beautiful and well worth checking out.

This show tells the history of Bamberg from since it was founded to after WW2, using shadows, light and sound effects. It was run by one man who seemingly controlled everything by himself. The show is set in one of the oldest buildings in the city, so the atmosphere is quite nice. I speak a little German, but was able to more or less follow along. Even though I didn't understand everything, I found it a nice experience and the man's dedication impressive. Smoked beer was offered during the show. It lasted around 1h 15min.

Such an interesting city in the world and this Cathedral is at the center of the oldest part affected by the Catholic church. Stunning views that transport you back in time.

Beautiful, but a bit too late in the season for the greatest impression and impact. Still, it was a beautiful and peaceful location and well worth the effort expended to walk there. Many varieties of beautiful roses in a formal garden, complete with a fountain in the center. It was very hot the day of my visit, so the dense foliage on the West side from the trees and many benches along the gravel path were appreciated. Earlier in the season would have undoubtedly increased my rating to 5 stars.

The castle is about a three mile hike from the train station (two miles from the old town). A good bit of it is uphill but it is a nice hike with excellent views. There is a restaurant at the castle and a tower you can climb but not much else. You have great views of the countryside from the castle too.

This nice place is in the centre near the famous Old Town Hall. The Regnitz River and the colourful old houses with beautiful geraniums in their windows are really very impressive. We wanted to take a boat trip but we didn’t have enough time. Maybe on the next visit.

The day was very warm and there were lotsa stairs that I didn't want to negotiate. I took pictures outside and then went to the Rose Garden and some blessed shade.

This well-preserved set of buildings constructed with sandstone bases and half-timbered upper stories forms a wonderful courtyard. It must be very beautiful in spring and summer and is definitely worth a look when visiting the nearby cathedral.

I saw this church from the street from the ObstMarkt several years ago on my first visit to Bamberg. I read up on the church in the intervening time and decided to visit the interior on this "art and architecture" tour of Germany, Belgium, and Austria. Very pleased that I did so. The interior isn't overwhelming, but is tastefully beautiful with lots of pink/rose colored marble in the structure. This is an excellent "add-on" during any visit to the Altstadt.
