Excellent cultural narrative from the lovely Manisha and lovely to escape the mad traffic later in the day. The bikes are sit up and beg, just about okay for the 3-5 km you cycle. Should have been told the advertised breakfast is not included (therefore makes the trip a bit pricey). Overall though a very enjoyable excursion.

This was my first visit to Pondicherry and after much research, I decided to avail the guided city tour since there is so much to cover! To say that the trip was very enriching and delightful would be an understatement!! We covered so much and with Mr. Manikandan’s expert knowledge as a local and guide was invaluable! Religion, culture, cuisine, monuments, he was very knowledgable… the best part was that he was very flexible and patient since I was traveling with kids… he kept engaging with them and drawing them into conversations so they would also feel included. Overall a great experience and I would undoubtably recommend Avtar Tours and travels for your sight seeing needs! I have already shared their details with friends and family who were so ecstatic to see pictures of the off beat places!!!

Great trip to see a lot in two days!! It covered Kanchipuram, Mammalapuram and Pondicherry! Driver was outstanding and kept us on time. Two guides were really good and knowledgeable. Only feedback we would give is that they need to add in bathroom and coffee breaks along the way... its lots of driving in two days. Also, it will be nice if they supplied water for the group like other tours i have seen.... Overall it was very good!

We absolutely loved this class with the wonderful Lakshmi! We came to the centre in the morning to see if Lakshmi could organise someone to do mehndi on my feet that day too. So she arranged We had our Kolam class earlier and straight after the mehndi artist could come. All organised and arranged so well and fast.
Lakshmi took the Kolam class and it was so interesting learning about the history and traditions behind this art which gave us a better understanding of all the beautiful Kolam pieces around the entrances to lots of places in Pondicherry.
She was very patient with us and it was a very fun class and a meditative process. We absolutely loved it!
I then got mehndi on my feet and the artist was phenomenal and I have had so many compliments about how good the mehndi is! If we had stayed longer in Pondicherry we would definitely have signed up for the mehndi class!
We cannot recommend this class and the Sita Cultural centre more, the staff are amazing and the classes wonderful! We hope to return again one day!

We booked a day trip from Chennai to Pondicherry but we also wanted to see Mahabalipuram so we phoned 5 Senses from London before we reached India and they were extremely accommodating and responsive with our request. On the day of the tour Satish, our guide, did an amazing job and managed to squeeze a lot of highlights in both places, and share key insights and stories - we learnt a lot! He didn't rush us, he had a heightened customer focus sense, and ensured we had a good time (despite the tour taking a few hours longer than initially planned). He was generous with his time, knowledge sharing, recommendations and advice. We loved our tour and decided to engage him for a Chennai tour the next day - which proved a great decision! Would definitely recommend 5 Senses and Satish.

I booked a day trip from Chennai to Pondicherry for my parents and they are talking about it even after a month. 5 Senses made a customised tour for them and even went ahead to further customise it on the day of travel. Mahabalipuram was not included in the original plan, but 5 Senses included it on the last minute, without any extra charge.
Car used for the trip was exceptionally clean and the driver was very courteous.
I would highly recommend the services of 5 Senses.

Pondicherry is a great day tour from Chennai. I didn't want to be so close and miss seeing Pondicherry. Very glad I went and that I did the tour with Rajesh and Wonder Tours.

Yes it is a long ride but when you can relax in an air conditioned car with a good driver and a great tour guide - Rajesh. Every hour or so there is a stop for a drink and a snack and a clean restroom. Pondicherry is completely different with it’s French roots and an interesting place to explore. Rajesh did an excellent job of showing me the sights of Pondicherry and there was a delicious Indian lunch included.

While I was in Chennai, I did 3 tours with Rajesh and Wonder Tours and couldn’t have been more delighted with them. Highly recommended.

We booked a 19 day, private tour with 5 Senses—visits to these sites in Tamil Nadu were part of it.

Five Senses did a fantastic job organizing our tour overall—no hiccups or headaches. Narayanan, the owner, is a joy to work with. He is super-responsive to emails and he checked in with us regularly to ensure that all was going smoothly. Also, the price was right. We stayed in excellent hotels, including one of the best we’ve ever had the pleasure to experience (The Leela Palace in Bangalore, not part of this particular trip segment). Narayanan gets much better rates than I could find on the web. When I checked Booking.com prices, our hotels alone added up to more than the cost of our entire trip, which also included transport, guides, domestic flights, cooking classes, dance demonstrations, etc. We choose not to include meals in our package, except for breakfast which came with our hotel rooms. We like to scout out our own restaurants.

It was wonderful to experience India, which can be challenging, in a comfortable, air-conditioned car. In Tamil Nadu our dedicated guide was Kannan, a knowledgeable, flexible and good guy overall. We had one driver and car in northern Tamil Nadu and a different driver and car in the south. (We left Kannan after Mahabalipuram to fly to Karnataka—see our separate review of those parts of the trip. Kannan met up with us again in Trichy.) Kannan was not happy with the first car the local company in Trichy assigned to us (he felt it was too noisy), so the morning after our evening airport pickup he greeted us in a better vehicle. We didn’t have to say anything, Kannan was on top of it. And once he learned we were keen on South Indian food, he recommended great local restaurants. Kannan knew when to visit to beat the crowds, the prices were jaw-droppingly low and the quality high. Yum!

I won’t review the big temples or historic sites we visited as there already is plenty of information about them on the web. Instead I’ll focus on activities specific to 5 Senses. That said, be sure to put Darasuram on your itinerary if you go to Trichy—it’s a much less crowded temple experience, especially in the morning. Kannan kindly allowed us to add it to our itinerary after we heard some other tourists raving about it at dinner. He also squeezed in the Vivekananda Center, an interesting visit in Chennai. And don’t miss the Sri Meenakshi temple at Madurai—it is amazing, even in the company of all the other incredible sites we visited. Our only disappointment is that they don’t allow photos in that temple. It broke my heart, but I found a lot of pix on the web to round out our collection.

One of our favorite 5 Senses experiences was a dosa and idli cooking class with Kannan’s aunt, at her house in Chennai. She and her son Ganesh were extremely hospitable, allowing us into their kitchen to watch, and to help a bit. It turns out that preparing dosa batter is complicated, and that one needs special equipment to cook idlis, so I don’t know if we will be able to replicate the experience back in the States. But it was great fun to see the process, to learn about foods we hadn’t tried before and to finish up by devouring all the good stuff Auntie had prepared.

We plan to return to India to explore the north in a year or two. I won’t bother checking with any other tour companies—why would I when I have faith in Narayanan and 5 Senses?

I found out a new and fun way of visiting Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram by Motorcycle! It was an awsome experience. Vijay was our guide and escort rider. He had tons of patience and ensured we has no difficulty in keeping up with him. The ride along the beach was memorable. The bikes were in great condition and we got helmet as well from the company. Stay and food was all pre arranged and everything was perfect. The attention to detail of 5 Senses Motorcycle Tours was laudable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves motorcycles

I just did this incredible tour along the coast on a motorcycle for 8 days from Chennai. The arrangements were immaculate and Vijay , our escort rider and host was simply outstanding. He was so passionate about his country as well as the motorcycle. We had a lovely time riding along the coast as Vijay ensured we were able to navigate through traffic. The hotels booked were comfortable and food was amazing. This is the best way to explore India! I would recommend this to anyone who is passionate about motorcycles.
