The Citadelle de Corte is an imposing structure and interesting to visit. The guide that is supposed to be accessible via a smart phone did not work well and we finally gave up. Beautiful 360-degree views from the Citadelle, though we wish there had been more signage and information as we walked around to give us a better sense of what we were seeing, what purpose various parts of the Citadelle served, etc.

It can be accessed from a trek through the Restonica Valley, via the scenic D623 route. Car park at the end of this road, the trek starts there. Easy to follow, it requires some fitness. You will pass Lac du Melo first, then proceed to Lac du Capitello. It felt like being on the Alps. Highly recommended day trip.

The whole town is pretty amazing, but the Belvedere gives you the best view. Also it is free!. Has a couple of cafes and shops. Not accessible for less mobile.

One of the highlights in the region together with the nearby lake Capitellu which is reachable if you hike a little further.
To get to lake Melo you can get with your car to Bergeries de Grotelle. There is a paid parking. The earlier you are how closer you can park. If there is no more space at the parking, or along the road at the last part, you have to park on the bigger parking which is around 4 kilometers further away. There is staff inspecting the parking so they decide if you can drive further or not. So you have to come early or late to park as close as possible.
First part of the hike is easy but along the whole way you have to be concentrated about loose stones. The further you go the steeper it gets.
There is not much shade and you have to come prepared; good walking shoes, sunscreen, enough water and food. This is no hike for people that are bad on their feet, small children's of dogs. Why? because just before you can reach the lake you have to use chains in the wall and a steep ladder. There is an alternative route, but that is hard to find, we used that one to get down and then you don't have to use chains and ladders.
We took around 1,5 hours on a steady pace to reach the Melo lake. It is a beautiful area, with nice mountain peaks, only the hike is already worthwhile. The lake itself was not that very special. The colour was not unique or anything. Keep in mind you are not allowed to swim there.
We made a part of the walk to the Capitellu lake but due to the fact we didn't had enough food with us and there is no bergerie near the lakes itself we only did 1/3 to Capitellu to have a better top view on Melo lake, already worthwhile!
Back down we used the alternative route, less busy and no congestion at the chains/ ladder because there is upcoming traffic.
TIP: just before you are reaching the bergerie the melo there are some nice natural pools where you can swim and relax.

Such an amazing hike from the Maison Forestière de Poppaghia. Day trip, challenging but rewarding. Beautiful scenery.

A well presented temporary exhibition about Matisse in Corsica. Apart from that, the permanent exhibition is average but helps you understand the history of Corsica. Indeed museum attendants spend much time on their cell phone!! The visit of the Citadelle will provide you with nice viewpoints.

Total hike from starting point not far from citadel of Corte to the bridge and back was around 13,5 km. It’s technically not very difficult but with around 500 meters elevation, high temperature and not much shade it is not easy. Especially the last part. Just follow the orange markings that’s is the most easy path. We started a more difficult route but can’t recommend it.
After around 2 km and just before the bridge you can refill your water bottle with water from a natural source.
Just after the bridge there are several spots to relax next to the water and swim. We staid there for 1,5 hour before starting the same rout back to Corte.
Not far from the starting point you can also park your car for free.

The trail begins almost immediately from the Corte carpark and ascends through open (and sunny) brushland, before getting into shady forest. There are a number of steep sections of loose dirt/rock, so take care. No water. Beautiful views and l'arche is cool!

We had a coffee on a small square in from of the church so why not to go in. Interesting interior. During the visit there was a rehearsal and the acoustics was superb. The concerts in the church must be a pleasure.

This statue stands in the main square and is a tribute to the man who fought hard for Corsica’s independence. He is the local hero.
