This was another one of our stops off of the Seward Highway. This center is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care. It was cold and rainy the day we visited so we drove the 1.5 mile loop and then got out of the car to view moose, bear, Elk, Wolf, Wood Bisons and Caribou up close. Their brochure stated in the summer you can feed the moose and participate in the training and feeding of the brown bears. You can get fairly close to the bears when they are in a certain area of their enclosure, but we had to view them from a boardwalk since they were in the bush area. This is worth a visit but I think there would be more to experience in the summer.

This trail is super accessible from many parts of the city and is not intimidating to those new to Alaska. It’s all in an urban area so you feel safe. Saw a moose!

This was fantastic!! We experienced a quick tram ride up in a car filled with skiers who were laughing and talking, eager to hit the slopes again. Our operator was friendly and made it fun. The views were phenomenal! At the top we enjoyed watching the skiers and the food was fantastic. The portions were huge and I gave over half of my delicious fries away to a guy sitting near us and a group of young men. Everyone there from the workers to the skiers were happy and friendly. The views from the top were spectacular. Definitely worth the money to ride for $60 which includes $25 of food of your choice at the top.

Board a medium size boat and motor out to the face of the Portage Glacier. You get to see the front face of a calving glacier with its interesting striations and sounds of cracking ice. Dress warm as it is quite chilly. It's really very pretty and interesting for those who appreciate nature.

This completely changed my thought of what it was to be a native Alaskan. There are shows of music and dance but what really impressed me were the outdoor exhibits of the various types of village dwellings complete with examples of hunting and fishing weapons, clothing and ways of life. Each dwelling had a guide to explain the items on display and answer questions. Interesting and informative.

We love the Holiday art show as well as the many excellent exhibits. The feathered bears were a favorite this year.

Getting here was an easy drive from the city. The parking lot was fairly full but we were able to find a spot fairly quickly. We first went to the overlook a short stroll from the parking lot. We had a great view of the city and Cook Inlet but Denali was hidden from sight. There were several birds flying around, probably feeding on the berries. The Canada Jay was a new one for us.

We set out at the Glen Alps trailhead. The ascent took us up past krummholz, pine trees so exposed to wind and rough weather that they grew not in an upright fashion but in twisted and distorted manner, close to the ground the meadows were turning red w/ early fall. We occasionally find blueberries but the areas near the trail had already been picked over. We ran into a local who showed us her tooth-edged berry scooper as well as several plastic containers filled with the efforts of the labor that morning. We spotted numerous alpine ground squirrels all in agitated and standing upright and alert. The reason for their anxiety was soon clear as we spotted a Northern Goshawk on the ground; we never did spot it fly at any of the squirrels. However we did see a couple hiking with their dog allow it to run free onto the meadow at the squirrels. We did not spot any moose.

We elected not to climb Flattop once we reached the junction in the trail; the rock scramble seemed too difficult. We thus stayed on Blueberry Loop, went around to the south where we had a good view of the start of Turnagain Arm. Wildflowers were still blooming in places. Fireweed, of course, but also Purple larkspur/monks hood, red and yellow Indian paintbrush and yarrow. In addition to blueberries there were lingonberries and crowberries.

We did what they said and arrived 1 hour prior to departure and we were the 2nd in line. Beautifully decorated for Christmas. There was a store with souvenirs and a coffee shop there so if you didn't have time to eat you can grab something.

We stopped in to hike and were greeted by friendly staff. The little visitors center has a lot packed into a small place. There are different furs and animal artifacts that are touchable as well as other useful information. There are comfortable chairs to just rest in the warm building for a while. The bathrooms were large and clean. They offered helpful advice an which trails would meet our needs. The trails were groomed and although the snow packed trail had about 2 ft of snow it was easily navigated. The views are spectacular!!

Nice quiet well maintained boardwalk through the marsh. Lots of ducks, an eagle, salmon hanging out, and some moose scat. Misty morning, only one other couple out there. Nice easy stop on the way down Turnagain Arm

I travel a lot and I love to explore. I’ve seen many amazing things and this trail (and glacier) are I think literally the most amazing things I’ve ever seen/experienced.

Absolutely breathtaking. Didn’t see a single other person. Light falling snow and around 0 degree Celsius (32 Fahrenheit). Such an incredible experience.

I’d like to acknowledge that this glacier and trail are on the traditional territory of the Alutiiq. I’m grateful to have been welcomed to visit.

We were at the celebratory start in Anchorage (March 4, 2023). Amazing atmosphere, beautiful and eager dogs, great teams and many spectators along 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. It was cold but sunny. As the teams started out, chears and whistling and clapping started all the way out of downtown. We also tried raindeer sausage at one of the vendors. GREAT EVENT not to be missed! The restart was next day out of Willow village.
