It was so refreshing to see the church that I once served as an altar boy and where I accelerated my faith as a Roman Catholic from 1964 - 1969. My visit there was no less than phenomenal! The ambiance and grandeur of the interior was as vibrant as the day I served the holy mass. The exterior did show its age but its architectural beauty was unblemished. This is a must visit if you are interested in exploring the rich history of this church that was reportedly one of the first Catholic Churches that allowed slaves to sit alongside with the white congregation. That history alone makes it a must visit site.

I originally hadn’t planned to visit Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on my trip to New Orleans, but accidentally came across the huge St. Jude statue. I saw that there was a jazz mass at 9, but we already had a paid excursion. My husband and I attended the Sunday 7:30 am mass before our planned activities.

Before mass, I entered into their small gift shop that only accepts cash. I was able to purchase candles that I could light inside the church or in the outdoor shrine. We were warmly welcomed as we entered into the church. The priest gave a beautiful homily and the tight knit parishioners were very friendly. At the end of mass, the priest asked the visitors to stand up. The congregation sang us a song. After we exited the church, the priest chatted with us. Overall, the experience was very positive, memorable and powerful. We highly recommend visiting Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Lastly, we also attended mass at St. Louis Cathedral and enjoyed our visit there as well.

This is an interesting example of a New Orleans cemetery where the remains are interred in vaults above ground because of the high water table. Someone in our group asked the guide why most of the vaults contain the remains of hundreds of individuals. He said sorry to be morbidly detailed but the high temperatures promote rapid decomposition of the bodies and they don’t take up much room.

We were so lucky to be in town for the first live concert by Lyrica Baroque since covid. There were strict covid protocols with vaccination and ID checked. The music was divine and in a setting that matched. Thank you for making safety so important that we could have live music again.

I was recently at The Haunted Sax on St Philip in the French Quarter. Its a lot of exciting things: its an estate collectable shop, a past life emporium and an amazing haunted doll shop. The dolls come to the woman who manages the shop in unusual ways. But they come nonetheless. They have a doll, Lillyette, The doll is a vessel for a spirit that settled in New Orleans over 300 years ago. She was a Parisian "streetwalker" that fell in love with the city because she was treated "like a person" there, so when she died her spirit stayed and eventially found the Hanted Sax. She now brings in other spirits that have died traumatic deaths and she urges them to the Hunted Sax where they have a safe place and can be healed. The dolls can be adopted for an adoption fee but only if you promise to give them a safe home and contact the shop every now and again to let the ladies at the shop know how they are doing.

This is a pretty fun experience actually, whether you believe in palmistry or not. The guy who did the palm reading, Charlie, was a super nice guy and engaging. The shop itself is interesting to look through and they offer tarot card readings too. Call first to be sure the person doing the reading you want is there, it’s a pretty laid back place and not always available for readings all day.
