We were staying in the UWS and were grabbing food for Zabars so it wasn’t out of the way.

Soaking up the atmosphere is pretty cool / just relax and get lost in the experience. The animations are really well done and the sound design is incredible. - Daniel C4 contributionsAlways enjoy coming to Sotheby's and checking out the exhibits. This past weekend was a little off-putting, however, because we had a strange interaction with an employee that was working the retail level on the ground floor (the area with all the handbags). My daughter was looking at a carry-on case and barely touched it when a sales woman marched over and barked that we should ask for help (there are no "do not touch" signs anywhere, FYI). This "lady" also was quick to tell us that the price of the bag was $20K; the subtext of course being that she presumed we couldn't afford it. So bizarre and so unlike the other professionals that work at Sotheby's. I guess there's a bad apple in every bunch, so I won't dock Sotheby's for this one unpleasant person. - christopherbO9687MPActon, MA730 contributionsThe Holographic Studios provides an excellent laboratory tour of how holographs & laser effects are created by "Doctor Laser" for commercial customers. I highly recommend the guided tour ($35 for ~90 minutes) given by Doctor Laser himself. He's both entertaining & informative, and otherwise you'll get lost wandering around the crowded laboratory by yourself.
Some of the highlights of this tour is seeing how various laser and photographic techniques are used to create holograms. It was interesting to see how the initially simple early holograms have evolved to the multi-colored and animated holograms used in commercial applications.
Doctor Laser punctuates the laser & holograms technical overviews with some humorous anecdotes about how he has worked with various companies & artists in creating custom laser shows & holograms to their specifications. Even the cramped laboratory space has some interesting anecdotes going back ~100 years to its time as a metal forge shop for horseshoes and later medical equipment.

The dedication of every team we call the "Dream Team" is exceptional. In the management of the career of the represented artist we are delighted with the digital system offered. For those of us who came from a previous training in business management, we give a note 10. The professionals at the Agora Gallery demonstrate a very special humanist side besides deep knowledge and study in art. Being recognized by the Agora Gallery conveys the message that we are in the right place: The Temple of the Arts. Being represented by the Agora Gallery is something difficult to write. If you are visiting NYC, this is THE place to go to whether you are serious about art or serious about having a good time around some awesome art. Well designed gallery, courteous and fun bartenders, servers and door men/women, eclectic and classy guests and most of all talented artists painting right in front of you while collaborating on their work with you. The creators Anthony and Adriane are extremely hospitable to each and every guest…you feel like you’ve known them forever. They are also super passionate about what they do so much so that their energy is contagious. Their unique concept hooked me from the first time I attended and made me come back the next two Fridays to see the piece as it evolved over three weeks. Previous artists are frequently on hand mingling and answering questions personally about their artwork created right here.
Tickets are very reasonable and the free drinks and party snacks are definitely a plus (hard to get anything for free in NYC these days). If you are visiting NYC and want to have an enjoyable night out while getting a taste of some great artwork from artists around the globe or if you just want to make new friends in an intimate, non-pretentious setting, you simply HAVE to check them out! The works are very contemporary and in some cases give a lot of credit to Black and Female artists who might have been ignored by the art scene in the US.
There are some interesting pieces in the collection and will only be open for a few more weeks. NY Earth Room is an educational experience in diversity. Read the reviews, then see for yourself the exact same simple installation. Are your views the same as others? Are yours different? It will take you as little as 3 minutes or as much as 15 if you enjoy it. It is in the heart of Soho, thus does not take you out of your way. Be sure to read the opening hours. It is free. Founded in 1977 by Martha Beck, @drawingcenter is an exhibition space in downtown Manhattan’s SoHo neighbourhood. The Center explores various drawing mediums both past and present. The current exhibition is free to visit.
Two artists were featured on my visit: Frank Walter: To Capture a Soul and Josh Smith: Life Drawing .
Frank Walter is an Antiguan artist (1926-2009) and a prolific producer of art, music, diaries, family trees (he was obsessed with his connection to British royalty. Known as a polymath, he had an amazing thirst for knowledge and self improvement. Smart, savvy and able to work across a variety of mediums, his body of work is exceptional and I found it breathtaking to absorb everything that was exhibited.
“During his lifetime Walter produced over 5,000 paintings, 1,000 drawings, 600 sculptures, 2,000 photographs, 468 hours of recordings, and a 50,000-page archive.” (The Drawing Center website).
Josh Smith, also a feature of this exhibition, shows his alignment with Frank Walter’s style. It’s Smith’s first exhibition of drawings.
Spent over an hour exploring the entire collection, soaking up Walter’s work first which set the groundwork for Smith’s work.
Admired Walter’s volume of art and diversity of the mediums. His autobiography contained 6824 sheets of typed content. Phew! (See photo)
Also appreciated the colour and somewhat abstract paintings of Smith. So much so I was tempted to buy a print from the well stocked merchandise space.
If I was staying longer, I’d definitely return for the next exhibition.
