My tour guide suggested I take the train. I had not ridden it before so sought some assistance.
The staff are all very nice and helpful.
One of the ladies came out of her information booth to show me how to buy a Clipper card and top it up.
She then explained how to get around and pointed me in the right direction and which platform to wait at for my train.
This made my life so much easier and it saved a ton rather than taking a taxi.
I was impressed with the frequency of trains as well as the wide corridors.

- Nancy BRochester, NY82 contributionsWe purchased the 3-Day MUNI pass on our recent visit to SF. And it was well worth it. The pass gave us access to the bus, trolley and cable cars (that's all we used). Our Airbnb was on the outskirts of the city and we were able to take the bus to get to the pier, ferry building, union square, etc. Keep in mind, this is the bus, so plan accordingly as it may take longer to get where you are going due to multiple stops. The experience alone was worth the ticket as we got to chat with locals who were mostly friendly. This did not get a 5 star rating because some of the bus drivers were not that helpful (while others were great). The cable car alone is $7.00 a ride but is included in the pass. We road the cable car just for fun several times as is it a true SF icon. Very dangerous. BART meanwhile handles the train traffic going outside of the city.
MUNI has a formidable task and you can't help but encounter them as a visitor to San Francisco.
The cable car system has been running for 150+ years with the same efficiency. There are little ticket machines at each turnaround where you can buy tickets.
I was told I had to buy a Clipper Card in order to use any bus, rail, ferry and train service. The card itself costs $3.
You will cringe I'm sure if only using the card once. It then becomes just a souvenir.
The streetcars I feel are not well-managed. My hotel front desk had no clue how they ran. I feel MUNI needs to run a hospitality training course for every single hotel, museum, restaurant and bar in San Francisco so they can educate the population who can then educate tourists.
I think it's embarrasing when locals can't even give you information. So I went online to research and found out that I can pay $3 cash on the Streecard that ran along Market street. However, the driver wouldn't take any money from me.
When I rode it a second time with my husband and brother, that driver also just waved us on. And nobody else was paying either. So it seems to be an entirely free service.
I imagine MUNI is losing a lot of money from not managing the streetcars. Even a $1 token fare would help cover their fees. Kids and the elderly though I think should ride for free.
