My first first visit to the Starlight Room despite having lived my entire life in the Bay Area. This space was recently renovated and renamed Lizzie’s Starlight Room. Lizzie is Queen Elizabeth 1 and the reference is to her possible romantic relationship with Sir Francis Drake. That’s fine but I didn’t see anything in the decor that reflected that. If you are alluding to something, carry out the illusion. The new decor is modern but they have left some traces of the original building showing. For example, the ceiling is now the exposed structure of the building, complete with conduit, sprinkler pipes, etc, as is now so common in restaurants. I don’t get it as it is terrible for ambient noise, which along with the loud music, makes conversation impossible. Hanging from the exposed ceiling is an old chandelier. Elegance and Industrial don’t mix. I know complaining about loud music just shows my age. I bet that different generations have different musical tastes so I mention it just to prepare potential visitors to this bar. Older folks won’t like it and younger ones won’t be bothered by it.
I do have to recognize the waitstaff. My adult children ordered drinks (which were in the $14-$16 range (it is an iconic place with a view in San Francisco so it won’t be cheap) while my wife and I only wanted coffee. Darlene, our server, has to ask her manager to go downstairs to get coffee which they served, complete with the entire carafe. And they didn’t charge for it, so five stars for the service.
If I were a visitor to San Francisco, and only had time for one visit to an iconic rooftop bar, I would opt for the Top of the Mark but overall Lizzie’s Starlight Room does not make a bad second choice.
