Grandview Unit of New River Gorge National Park is our favorite part of the park. It is usually less crowded that the northern end, has wonderful vistas and a plethora of easy as well as challenging hiking trails and since it used to be a WV State Park, it has more of a recreational feel to it. There is an expansive shaded picnic area with three shelters, a playground and ball field. The grounds are well maintained by the Park Service. Plenty of parking. No admission charge to this National Park. There is a small but adequate visitors center near the main overlook. Rest rooms and drinking water are located near the picnic area as well as Shelters #2 and #3. Make sure you take in the breathtaking view at the Main Overlook and if you have some more time the other six overlooks north of there. The flowering rhododendron display is one of the best in West Virginia.

This is a nice West Virginia State Park, located in the Beckley-Beaver area and very close to the Grandview Unit of the New River National Park but a very quiet and restful alternative. Camping is the only overnight possibility. Bring your own picnic as there is no restaurant nor snack bar. Plenty of picnic tables and three shelters. The gift shop doubles as an information center and trail maps can be obtained there. There is a scenic lake for boating and fishing. The trail around the lake is popular with local runners. The hiking trails, while scenic, are not very difficult and do not involve a large elevation change. There is a nice waterfall at the dam attheend of the lake. Rest rooms located at the park picnic shelters. The park is well frequented but rarely has a crowded feel. There is a convenience store ten minutes west of the park. Kailei in the gift shop is especially knowledgeable about the park and it’s hiking trails. There is no admission charge.

We drove up to the overlook and it was an easy drive and there was sufficient parking on this particular day. There is a nice view from the parking lot but you really need to walk up the wooden steps to get to see the best views. The little path to the steps has a canopy of trees and the bottom of the steps hug the large boulders at the bottom so there is some shade but the actual platform to see the gorge is open and can get hot. There were different vantage points that you could see different sections of the gorge, but the one view had a large tree in its line of sight obscuring some of the view. The other view the river seemed a bit far in the distance. Turkey Spur was a little disappointing, but none the less still beautiful

When visiting New River National Park Grandview Unit a hike on this trail is a must. It’s is easy to moderate in difficulty and suitable for all fitness levels but due to the steps on both ends not for those with mobility issues or disabilities. There is no charge to enter Grandview or any part of the New River Gorge National Park. Parking at Grandview is ample. This part of the park is rarely crowded. A Visitors Center, rest rooms, drinking water , playground and shaded picnic tables are located at the east end of the parking area. The trail can be accessed from the baseball field just behind the picnic area or from the main overlook where the other park trails begin. The Tunnel Trail is two short loops. The trail is mostly under huge rock formations and the vegetation is very lush. It is pleasantly cool hiking this trail. There are no steep drop offs right on the edge of the trail however there are a few just off it. Do not bushwhack. The tunnel from which this trail got its name is now closed for safety reasons. The second tunnel is officially open but not recommended to the average hiker as it features a steep decline on big wet rocks covered with slippery moss. Allow about one hour for this hike to take in the beauty and get some good pictures for souvenirs.

They have the usual things you see in booth style antique malls: a lot of glassware, books, and small items as well as a few pieces of furniture. A bit crowded, but lots to look at. The hunks of native lumber turned into shelves and walls were unique. One vendor had a big selection of Fiestaware that we assumed was possibly new factory seconds from the price and variety.
