What travellers are saying
- Andrew PAlbury, Australia35 contributionsAn interesting part of history, walking through this long, dark (and echoing) tunnel. We didn’t get to see the echidna, but the sign out the front is informative.Written 3 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - C...Victoria, Australia91,935 contributionsWhen I first visited this centre a few years ago, the wetlands was in flood and the centre was closed- it was Covid.
I visited again this week and it was open... I finally got to go inside and look around. It's really well set up - an information area, a gift area, information brochures, toilets and there is an area right behind it with a beautiful garden looking over a pool of water.
Further, the lady inside was so informative. Only because of her assistance did I take a different road home and it was incredibly scenic. She also was able to give me ideas for more day trips.
If you are in Yea, I would put this on your list of things to do... because whilst the wetlands area is flooded and inaccessible at the moment... you can still enjoy the garden and the centre.Written 7 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The reserve is at the northern end of Toolangi State Forest.
There are six designated campgrounds in the reserve-
*Blackwood Camp
*Bull Creek Camp
*Cassinia Camp
*Ferns Camp
*SEC Campground
*Water Gauge Camp
Picnic tables and wood-fired BBQ's are available at most sites (bring your own wood). Flushing toilets are located at Ferns Camp, Bull Creek Camp, Suspension Bridge Day area and pit toilets are located at all other sites.
The reserve has car parking areas for day-trippers as well. From most areas of the reserve, you will find reasonable walking tracks and limited signage. If you aren't a camper, you can eat at nearby Yea after or before your walk and the town offers a good selection of places to eat.Written 17 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - C...Victoria, Australia91,935 contributionsThe tracks have been removed from the old station area now that the station is no longer used and the railway reserve has been turned into the Yea Railway Park.
The park includes the historic railway station and about five hectares of parkland. It has a picnic shelter, barbecue, toilets, playground, skatepark, walking track and community reserve, and includes a Rotary park.
The area is lovely to walk through with gardens included.Written 14 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Gothic architecture was perceived by the pious Victorians as an expression of religious, and therefore, moral values. Its revival was thus seen as virtious and equated with moral revival. For this reason an ecclesiastical character was predominant.
As befits such architecture, St. Luke’s is a modest church with elegant lines. It features a steeply pitched roof of corrugated iron and plainly fashioned walls that excellent stone masonry. It features common qualities of Victorian Academic Gothic architecture including a parapeted gable, wall buttresses marking structural bays, and lancet stained glass windows with restrained tracery around them. The cost of the build was £600.00 with an additional £200.00 for essential furnishings, which included aid from the government.
It is believed that funding to build the St Luke's Church in Yea all started in 1862 with a donation of 16 shillings donated by a Miss Watton. Her wish was that the funds were to be placed towards the construction of an Anglican Church in Yea. Miss Watton’s wish was fulfilled six years later when St. Luke's Anglican Church built on the corner of Lyons and Pelissier Streets was officially opened in October 1868.
The church is prominently located in the centre of town, not far from the War Memorial. I took a walk around it ... it has lovely gardens. If you like old architecture ... it's worth stopping to have a look.Written 14 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Watson) and part of the pulpit from the original church were moved to the present church. The first minister in the new church building was the Rev H A E O'Sullivan, who was appointed about 1921. The Anglican and Presbyterian Churches has established a school about 1859, and the church buildings had also been used at some stage for the school.
Funds were largely raised through bonds, with the final payment made in 1939. Harvey Blanks writes that this was 'partly as a result of a £500 legacy from Mrs Officer'. Local families have donated various items of furniture, stained glass and there have been minor alterations over the years ... The total cost of the Church was £2,600.
It's a beautiful looking building... unfortunately with Covid, it is not open to the public. I am not sure if it is without Covid. Built of red brick with a spire, it is a lovely church to look at.Written 14 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Victorian Heritage Database notes: "The station represents the most picturesque design of railway buildings prepared by the Railways Department. It features polychromatic brickwork, decorative barge-work and a jerkinhead slate roof. The entrance porch includes detailing consistent with the Tudor style featuring shallow and angular pointed openings to the windows. The walls are pierced with blind slit windows, and the verandah columns are finished with foliated capitals."
Train services commenced in November 1883, with a morning service daily from Tallarook to Yea. In 1889 the service beyond Yea was commenced towards Molesworth and train operations were shifted to Yea from Tallarook.
The last train, hauled by a Diesel Locomotive Y 158 departed Yea at 6.30pm on the 6th November, 1978. No train ever visited the Yea area again.Written 14 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. "GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918.
REMEMBER WITH
THANKSGIVING THE
TRUE AND FAITHFUL
MEN WHO IN THE
GREAT WAR WENT
FORTH FROM THIS PLACE
FOR GOD AND RIGHT.
THE NAMES OF THOSE
WHO RETURNED NOT
AGAIN ARE HEREON
INSCRIBED TO BE
HONOURED FOR EVERMORE.
TO THESE HAVE BEEN ADDED
THE NAMES OF THEIR COMRADES
OF THE 1939 - 1945 WAR
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE SAME CAUSE."
Remember indeed... it's been a long time since those two world wars, but there have been many conflicts since where our military defend our country. We should take a moment to remember and reflect and that is what places like this offer.

They and their party trekked south from Appin to Lake George, then on into Victoria, keeping west of the Great Dividing Range and ending up at Corio Bay, on the Victorian coast, where present day Geelong is situated.
The expedition was mostly financed by Hume and Hovell themselves. To raise the money needed, Hume sold an imported iron plough – a sought-after item in the new colony – and Hovell sold some of his land. They received a small amount of assistance from the Government stores, including six pack saddles, a tent and some clothing for their convict servants.
The monument commemorates the explorers Hume and Hovell, who passed through the area in 1824. The memorial was unveiled in 1924, the centenary year of their exploration. It's prominently located across from the War Memorial...pretty much in the centre of town.Written 14 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
