- Jilly2903Llan Ffestiniog, UK1,933 contributionsHubby and me visited Ynys yesterday (Tuesday morning). We parked on a small lay-by on the A496 lower road to Harlech. There was a small sign in Welsh (Eglwys Llanfihangel) pointing to the lane opposite (by the former caravan site - Gwyndy Mawr - where the large red dragon is). We walked up the hill along a narrow country lane, over a cattle grid, then carried on where the rough road veered to the right until we reached the entrance gates to the church. This sounds more complicated that it reads. It was a gradual upbank walk which only took about 5 minutes. There was a sign on the gates which said no dogs were allowed.
This church is a Grade 2 listed building. Its history goes back to the mid 12th century. It was originally built on a rocky tidal islet - the village name of Ynys means Island - later the land rose and connected the mount to the mainland. The location is quiet and isolated with panoramic views over the Dwryd estuary and the surrounding countryside.
We were pleased to find this little church open to the public. We liked the exposed timber roof and the arched beams (painted on which are the words to a religious verse). We saw a colourful stained-glass window depicting St. Tecwyn, and several slate memorial tablets.
We had a wander around the large square churchyard where we saw a wooden 2-seater bench and a convenient blue portaloo!. There were numerous headstones. Apparently there are about 40 mariners buried in these grounds.
Opposite the church entrance door (just off the path by the tree) we saw a slender stone pillar, about 5 feet high, with all 4 sides carved with a Latin inscription. I later deciphered this as saying "this is the grave of Wleder, mother of Odeleu, who first built this church in the reign of King Owain". The latter reigned between 1137-1170. This rare 12th century pillar is also Grade 2 listed.Written 31 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Quite humbling to be in such an old church and to stand and think of the worshippers from hundreds of years ago. A little disappointed at seeing artificial flowers and candles, didn't think they were necessary and didn't improve the experience.Written 28 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jilly2903Llan Ffestiniog, UK1,933 contributionsMe and Hubby made a brief stop off at Talsarnau on a recent Tuesday. The A496 Maentwrog to Harlech road runs through the village. We noticed this war memorial opposite the Honda Garage. To the left of the memorial is the redundant Christ Church.
We opened the gate and walked up the path to take a closer look at the stone obelisk. It commemorates 14 local residents who were killed or missing as a result of World War 1 (1914-1918) and World War 2 (1939-1945). These brave ordinary men should never be forgotten.Written 2 August 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
