What travellers are saying
- Gilly360Durham, UK47 contributionsFor a short but interesting visit, a stunning place to see. The caverns - a former slate mine, have an inspiring natural beauty and also tastefully and safely set up for visitors with paths and attractive lighting. The exhibits were informative ( best to have a light source to see fully). The caverns are worth seeing for the pool and interesting history- such as a naval rum store and the workings of the mine.
Much thought had been put into the nicely landscaped grounds and 'fairy garden' although in poor weather, a bit muddy in places. Health and Safety was adhered to with hard hats, handrails and sanitising. Staff seemed friendly and professional. Tea room available.
Didn't take long to get around the attraction but was well worth seeing. Going early in the morning, the carpark seemed to fill up quickly when we left.Written 9 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Tim W18 contributionsThis hidden gem tells the story of Emily Hophouse, a Cornish woman who took it upon herself to challenge the conditions in refugee and concentration camps set-up during the Boar War at the end of 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. I know very little about this war fought at the height of British colonialism but this visit taught me so much. We hadn't planned to stop but were looking for a loo and cup of tea break on the way home from Newquay. We spoke to a young man, i think his name was Sam, who gave us a brief synopsis what the site was all about, the Rectory being the house Emily grew up in, the grounds and the War Rooms. The house has been restored to the Victorian age with furniture and clothes depicting the times and culture of the day. We couldn't, unfortunately, explore the grounds as the Storm Bert and time was against us but we did book a slot in the War Rooms. This was a fascinating immersive experience taking you through the first stages of the war, it's development and hoe Emily became involved. This itself is a enlightening story and is told in a sensitive but at times brutal way. The whole experience was fantastic, the staff we very polite and knowledgeable despite the fact we were the last visitors for the day, nothing was too much trouble. We were so glad we stopped and would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.Written 26 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JonCaterham, UK287 contributionsStayed nearby and visited in order to run around the lake.
Good, flat pathway whole way around the lake, just under 5k in distance. Lake is in a lovely setting and very picturesque with plenty to enjoy as you run.
There is a cafe on site but didn’t get to use as there before it opened. Also toilets on site at end of the car park.
Only negative is the parking charge, £3.10 for up to 2 hours 24 hours a day with ANPR camera enforcement.Written 23 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It did help that the weather was perfect, glorious sunshine, not tooo hot but the views over Bodmin moor were spectacular and the Neolithic rings near the start were amazing. If you get the chance and the weather is fine
