Today we had the honour to visit Bibhu Maharana sir's house, it was such a privilege watch him paint and teach us the intricacies, techniques and authentic colour creations of Pattachitra. He fed us lunch and told us many stories.

When I asked him, when people copy his work, does he feel bad? He smiled and said my work is to create, I don't think beyond that. I don't think if I will earn money, I don't think if my work is better or worse than others, I definitely don't think what if someone copies my work. I create, that's how God made us, to create. Not to compete or compare.

This workshop was organised by Gilherio, Bhubaneswar. I will request all Odisha based artists, and beyond to take this workshop once. Not to learn art, but to learn the humility and knowledge a person requires to be an artist. ❤️

Excellent weather despite peak summer...Chilka Lake and Konark temple apart from Chandrabagha beach stood out as outstanding. There were Odisi dance performances at Lingaraj temple and was out of the world

    Orissa part 1 : Day 1 Arrival at B

    Travel from
Gangtok : flew out o Pakyong to Kolkata and Kolkata to Bhubaneswar. Access by train and road
    Also doable

Mayfair Lagoon is a magnificent property spread over twelve acres. 9 km from Biju Pattnaik airport with approximately 15 km travel time and 4 km from nearest city CENTRE. With majority of the rooms overlooking the lagoon. Once you enter the gates you enter another realm.
Since this was a group trip with family and friends and for a group size of 13 this couldn’t be a better suited property for the diverse age groups . Swimming pools in the villas and cottages and spacious tastefully done rooms and detailing in every nook and corner. There are play areas for the little ones

    *Something for everyone*
The jogging track for the fitness freaks and the pools for the swimmers. The well stocked Tea Pot ( dining area) the classy Baron and Baronness Bar with a lot of vintage cars and photo ops for social media uploaders including the picture with the Johnny walker. The propeller plane with a story of road travel from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar is something you would want a picture for posterity.

Well stocked coffee station in every room. Some cottages had offices for business stays.

Service : impeccable and courteous giving the residents. They wait on you with a smile.

Since the cottages rooms and villas are spread out you can find your own space and corner when you need a break.

Palate : tea pot and lemon grass is where we went. The buffet at Teapot had a wide variety of breakfast for all palates.
Local breakfast recommended by the chef were assorted patha and aloo vada
Lemongrass : pad thai and gyoza recommended

Bathrooms : Mayfair bathrooms are curated to suit different habits. It’s pretty and squeaky clean and like all Mayfair bathrooms you will find signature bucket, mug and stool. Ours was a blue stool this time.

    Covid: protocols in place.

Pricing : affordable luxury and if you like service and personal attention you get it.

This was a stopover since the flight arrival was after 7.45 pm.

The next morning was a drive to Puri. 1.5 to 2 hour journey. Traveling in large groups takes longer .

Puri home to the famous Jaggan Nath temple. We checked into Mayfair waves and were greeted with Tika and Khada and welcome drinks. Quickly checked into the rooms and prepped for the beach. The suite overlooked the Beach and the view was stunning. The Mayfair Heritage is across the street overlooking the beach. The group had to spread across two properties since it was fully booked for the holidays.

Mayfair Waves has a private beach. The beach was clean and the golden sand was refreshing. There were appointed trained “noila” who will take you for body surfing in the waves. Like any other beach in India you will have vendors providing massage and selling shells and conch and tea and coffee. They will sell pearls, gemstone and diamonds too. A word of caution towards buying the pearls, diamonds and gemstones.

Since the beach was a private there was plenty of space for kids to run around and swim in the sea. If a large group wanted events organized that was possible too.
Come evening it’s high tide and it was time to head towards the pool. Some activity for children like pottery and pot painting was available by the poolside. If you want some snacks and drinks then the counters are available for that too for the residents.

The Samunder Restaurant served sumptuous tasty food for the hungry and tired . Their sea food salad and sea food starters are a must try.

Day 3: breakfast and Beach. A quick visit to the Jaggan Nath Temple and temple food for lunch. The concierge will provide assistance for the temple visit if informed in advance. Be sure to wear chappals( Sandles) that can be washed since temple is barefoot access only.

Post that it is all beach and beach. The kids loved it.

Day 4. Onwards to Gopalpur the hidden gem. A3.5-4 hour drive by road south of Puri. The drive was beautiful through the paddy fields and and Eastern Ghatis. There is an alternate longer scenic drive which was under repair and we couldn’t take that. Stop by at Chilka Dhaba if you want to try local cuisine.
The prawn and crab Oriya style were finger licking good with Naan and Rice. If one hesitated at its ambience, all was forgotten when the food was served. It was one busy dhaba where the restaurant was serving over 100 persons at a time mostly local customers. There maybe a wait time of 10-15 minutes, since our group was large it took us a while to find space.

Driving through the fields and Ghati, we reached Mayfair Palm Beach Gopal pur on Sea was a refreshing surprise.

When you enter you get the Mediterranean vibe and as you move in you realize that it’s a 107 year old property that has stood the test of time and changed hands. It is by the Gopalpur Light house and it has been tastefully upgraded to its current state by the Mayfair group. With high ceilings and beach access and well manicured gardens and lawn. Overlooking the sea it has its own story to tell where the biggest names of the country have been hosted over its 107 years. The rooms and suites are tastefully done in pastel bright colors and local sea shells being part of the decor.

The beach is an active one with Water scooter rides at Rs 1000 and Catamaran ride locally called as the banana boat ride at Rs 1500 for a group of 5 which will take you to the sea and let you swim in its calm waters. ATV in the sand and Horse and Camel rides are also available.
Recommended time is October to Dec for Seaside fun, Jan for Riddle turtle ( that swim across the ocean) mating season view and migratory birds between Jan to Feb and Dolphins in March. Gopalpur on Sea is an experience waiting to be discovered. There are other hotels and resorts along the shoreline right upto the Gopalpur Port. There is a Hotwater spring within 70 km distance called Taptapani. Konark between Puri and Gopalpur.
For this time our focus was time in the seaside.
Children feedback both beaches were fun one was pure beach and swimming in the sea. Other was full of activities.

Parents : seafood was delicious and crab and prawns were in plenty and each place the size and taste unique based on the source. Everyone of them was scrumptious.
There are many options along the beach and the public beaches appeared clean and well maintained.
Staying at Mayfair Properties across Orissa was an affordable luxury where they excel in hospitality and Service.

Do give a thumbs up if you find this post useful.

Day 5 evening headed back to Bhubaneswar and Mayfair lagoon and day Six returned via Kolkata and landed in Pakyong while enjoying the view of the hills before landing .
Kalimpong aerial view was exiting if you know Kalimpong well.

Reached home. For lunch tired and happy

Bookings available in MakeMyTrip/ or directly in Hotel website.
Many plans are available to choose from.

Go Orissa Go for seaside fun.
