Prison Island is arguably one of the best tortoise sanctuaries in Zanzibar. The island houses numerous tortoises that carry with them a rich history. I was excited by the chance to interact with them though I was a bit concerned about their care. The place is beautiful and gives you value for your money. Nevertheless, ensure you get a professional guide that understands the ins and outs of Zanzibar. I would recommend my guide Eric of Startours. Eric (+255756983368).

Interesting history. Wish we had a story telling guide to really enjoy it. Choose your guide wisely. We used the one from our otherwise great safari company and ours was not even decent at sharing the history with us. We listened in to others and yearned to be with them.

A small oasis of tranquility and shade that is worth visiting after visiting the Old Fort.

Small park located between the fort and the sea, which has a small kiosk.

It is part of the Old Town promenade, where there are rows of old cannons and from where you can have good views of some coastal islands.

    Recommended.

Is an African traditional market where you can find anything you want in very good prices. A place where all sellers come to trade their goods. Everywhere you see there are colours and smells. Many fruits and vegetables, meats and fish and many other goods.
It is usually very crowded especially on sundays and a little bit dirty.
Is something that you are not familiar with but worth a lot a vist to see the tradition and the culture.
Spice corners are full of amazing smells and colours

Obligatory place of pilgrimage for all Freddy Mercury fans. It is the house where he was born, although he did not live there for long as his parents sent him to India with his grandmother when he was eight years old and when the 1963's Zanzibar revolution they all left for England.

There are only photographs in the museum.

It is the first museum dedicated to him.

I was here on Easter Sunday and it was great that there was an English language Holy Communion in the side chapel. The Swahili language service was taking place in the main part of the cathedral and was well attended.
It was so sad to see the memorial to the slave trade just next door and to know what terrible suffering took place there.

I got a chance to visit this beautiful historic building but there were no live performances currently due to COVID-19 but I got a chance to tour the building. There were several performers practicing and classes going on at the time. Wonder building and staff.

The exterior of the fort is in good condition. There is not much left on the interior. There are a lot of souvenir stands in the fort. There are also some artists' studios as well. Please note that the artists' do not like their pictures taken. The merchandise is really no different from other stores in town.

This is a great old building with many hidden gems inside of great historic significance for the island. When entering be prepared to have someone offer to tour you around for a tip, though I prefer going at my own pace to tour museums. But this museum is a must see with great pieces to see from paintings to households items.

These baths in a quiet part of town are nicely restored and give you a good idea of what they would have looked like in years past. The mannequins could use some updating (or removal) but the overall experience is good

Beautiful colonial building near the ferry terminal. Inside, on the ground floor and first floor, are exhibits with photos and information boards about old times on Zanzibar. It’s well worth half an hour of your precious time - and for free to boot!

A visit to this museum is a great introduction into Zanzibari history. Said, who runs the museum, is one of the best story tellers on the island.

This is a very unique artistic place.
The henna paintings are equisite! The ladies are extremely talented using this painting technique.

I have purchased one of their artworks and wish had a bigger luggage to take more!

They also do body henna painting in store, so I had my hand done.

A must visit place if one loves art.
