This is a great experience and only a short 30 minute travel from the harbour at Stone Town.

There are a number of guided tours offered online but my advice is to do this all independently. Go to the harbour and pay for boat transfer over ($30 dollars return maximum and that is for the boat not per person) and then pay the $4 entrance fee. The trip over is about 30 minutes one way and in total to see everything will take you no more than one hour.

The place itself is very run down so there isn't actually much to do except feed the tortoises. The place could really do with some investment as I'm sure the buildings have a story in themselves but there are dilapidated and the notice boards are all faded. It would also be good to see some investment in the tortoise pen. Given how cheap it is I believe they could increase the price and spend some money improving the place. There was plastic bottles and rubbish on the ground when I visited which wasn't great to see although we raised this with the person on the desk and he sent someone in to the enclosure to collect it.

A small oasis of tranquility and shade that is worth visiting after visiting the Old Fort.

Small park located between the fort and the sea, which has a small kiosk.

It is part of the Old Town promenade, where there are rows of old cannons and from where you can have good views of some coastal islands.

    Recommended.
